20% only goes to Jackson after he's earned out his production company's $20 million flat fee (already included in the budget), and even then it's only 20% of the adjusted gross, a very different thing than what the theatres take in. (In particular, the adjusted gross does not include the money kept by the theatres.)

As the following article points out, this was a sweet deal for Universal compared to, say, Schwarzenegger's deal for Terminator 3:

Kong has earned $520 million world-wide; while it didn't set the world on fire it's not a flop by any stretch of the imagination.

Reminds me of summer 97 when Something About Mary outgrossed Godzilla by about 40million.

Yep, the formula to success is more R-rated comedies!

It didn't.

Kong is slightly ahead in domestic gross, but overall gross it earned close to double.

It beat Batman Begins (both domestic and international), which is the title I was comparing it to as far as tracking its totals back in December. BB's budget was of course not as high, but it was up there. $150 mil + whatever ads cost.

Looks like it will end up being the #5 grosser of 2005. Not bad, considering what's ahead of it (Star Wars, Potter, Narnia, War of the Worlds).

Every one of those films will be quickly forgotten. Kong will be one of those titles that will be referenced often.
