To Catch a Killer:

The story of John Wayne Gacy told moreso from the detectives side....and what they had to deal with, put up with...and finally....find out.

A great story.

Damn good movie. Rhea was damn good in that.

I'd also go with, as others have mentioned, Se7en and I'll throw out Heat and Devil in a Blue Dress.

The 40's were peaking in this with film noir, even the numerous Basil Rathbone potrayed Sherlock Holmes films were hit after hit.

Murder, My Sweet is a great one (Private Detective, though, not Police Detective).

The Long Goodbye is one of my favorites. Not for everyone's taste though (of course what is).

Superb movie. Also, off the top of my head, Murder by Decree, the great Bob Clark film with Christopher Plummer and James Mason as Holmes and Watson, respectively, hunting Jack the Ripper.
