Why is the 'horror' genre so appealing to many?

Why do people like horror? It's a broad genre and people vary, so there are probably tons of reasons. Not to play armchair psychiatrist or anything, but I notice that for me, the time when I was most into horror was when I was pretty repressed. Maybe it was a release of bad feelings, fear, and anger. Or maybe not and I'm just full of shit. I like the "fear without consequences" theory--that seems pretty likely.

There are spooky scenes that don't require anyone being maimed, though, like the birthday party glimpse of the alien in Signs. Alien is a great horror movie, too. Sometime watch just how little blood there is in the film yet how creepy it is.
Easily one of the funniest (unintentional, of course) shots in that entire shitfest.
