Anyone looking forward to Syriana?

I personally cannot wait to see it as it seems to be similar to "Traffic."

Whereas "Traffic" shows the drug trade and its connection from the high echelons of power to every walk of life, "Syriana" (as I take it fm the trailer) follows the oil industry and its political trail amongst the intelligence community, the big companies, the Middle Eastern countries and the terrorists.

I hope this film doesn't pull its punches since it's been a while that I've enjoyed a highly-political movie.

Dearl lord no. It looks like a Michael Moore type political wankathon. And I'm a democrat.

I don't know. Some reviews say it's a mess.

I think it looks very interesting. Traffic wasn't a political "wankathon," at least not to me; it presented several sides of the issue in an intelligent manner. I will be seeing this in the theaters, and will hopefully have an good conversation afterwards.

I agree with you on Traffic - it's one of the few politically charged movies that actually presents the sides fairly (or as much it could be).

I just don't think there will be a "sympathetic" side to big oil and Middle Eastern countries.

This one wasn't really on my radar but having recently seen the trailer for the first time........it does look promising, so "yes", I'm considering a trip to the theater for this one.

I agree; I think the main focus will be on the dueling greed between the two, which is just as interesting to me.

Traffic had Steven Soderbergh directing it.

While Oscar-winner Stephen Gaghan wrote and directed Syriana, the man has also worked on such real winners like:

- Rules of Engagement (which he wrote).
- The Katie Holmes stinker Abandon (which he wrote and directed).
- The biggest bomb of 2004, The Alamo (which he wrote).
- The shelved for almost two years Havoc (which he wrote).

Simply put, Gaghan doesn't have a good track record. I'm really looking forward to Syriana, but my expectations are low.

Ebert and Roeper practically creamed their pants reviewing it so yeah, it is probably worth looking into.

Maybe. It takes a LOT to get me in a theater nowadays. This looks intriguing.

Same here. Other than going to a private screening of the last Star Wars film, the last film I saw in a theater was Love Actually.

That being said, I do believe I may break the fast and go see Syriana in the theater.

It looks good, I'll probably see it on a 1pm show, lately it seems annoying high school kids take over at night, and their usher friends don't care how much noise they make.

Somehow I don't envision that kind of viewership for a movie like this. lol

Indeed, the current issue of Entertainment Weekly said that while Syriana is a good movie, the EW writers do worry that its politics could turn off a lot of viewers.

I might see it probably after it comes out on DVD.

Definitely picking this up once it's on DVD. This year's been good for political thrillers: Interpreter, Constant Gardener...

I went to a screening last night, and it was filled with older kids/young adults. I didn't expect that either.
