Zathura -- D: Jon Favreau

Just caught this on the nationwide sneaks this afternoon. Great family flick and highly entertaining for adults alike (i'm 25 and enjoyed the hell out of it). The kids are good, Dax Shepard is really good and the FX are top notch. Not as funny as Jumanji, but I enjoyed this one more. Although, if you're taking little kids, the movie is really intense and they will most likely be scared out of their minds (the Zorgons are pretty scary).

Favreau shows that he definitely has skill behind the camera. This guy has put together another solid effort and I really can't wait to see how he handles John Carter...should be great. Zathura opens on Nov. 11. Go check it out!

Yeah, I caught this about a month ago and really liked it. It is, for all intents and purposes, "Jumanji in space." That didn't keep me from enjoying it, though.

Fantastic movie. It's good to see imagination in a family film now and again.

Isn't it pronounced Zan-thura?

Favreau and Shepard both pronounced it "Zuh-THURa" at the Q&A after the screening I attended.

Groucho is making fun of the woman on The Apprentice who kept pronouncing it "Zan-thura."

Ah. Shame I don't have bad taste in television, or I'd have understood the joke immediately.

I think Zathura is one of those film's that deserves to be seen in a theater (assuming you don't have a huge projection screen at home), even if only for the sake of the special effects.

Anyway, if thinking The Apprentice is a shitty show makes me "a real dick," then yes...yes I suppose I am.

Damn...ya gotta be quick around here. I was planning on making the Zan-thura joke....but....way too late.

Guess I fall in the dick category too.

But anyway, I look forward to seeing this.

I'm not a fan of the show, in fact I didn't see the episode in question but your response was very derogatory.

Why yes, yes it was. I did, indeed, express a low opinion of the show. Now that you've pointed out what exactly I said regarding the show, perhaps we can attempt to get the thread back on topic. Thanks. :)

Agreed. The FX are pretty awesome in this flick and are really worth the price of admission... definitely one to check out on the big screen.

You know, the effects in the trailer look slightly low budget, but I've seen several professional reviews claiming the same thing. Did they - god forbid - actually use props instead of all CG for a change?

Fine,

I think this is a rental at best. Chris Van Allsburg has managed to trick Hollywood into adapting one of his mediocre stories again; which isn't surprising since it's essentially the same story as the last movie.

Yes indeed. In fact, they brought in the Zorgon ship and the robot at our screening. Prior to the movie, I was like, "those are pretty nifty looking." After seeing it, I was all, "they made these models look like that on film?! Awesome!" Favreau did a hell of a job on the effects here.

Sort of. Both games are from the same world, so that's the connection.

Both books are written by the same author (Chris Van Allsburg, I believe).

Caught this this afternoon with my 5yo niece. We loved it, though I could tell she was a little scared with the Zorgons,
Spoiler:
robot and the first appearance of the astronaut.
I'd probably put it over Jumanji, which I also enjoyed. Performances were excellent all around. Loved how the wish parts were played, though the ending was a little abrupt for me. Doubtful that Kristen Stewart will be mistaken for a boy this time around, as she was in Panic Room (Favreau almost seems too intent on proving this). "Oh God, I knew we shouldn't have rented Thirteen!"

I hated Jumanji...so I'm guessing I should steer clear of this? Is it bascially the same premise - except aliens instead of spiders and knife-weilding monkeys?
