Best funeral/wake/eulogy scenes (spoilers)
Obviously, there will be spoilers: someone is dead that might not be dead at the start of the movie.
I just watch Kurosawa’s Ikiru and the wake scene was one of the best character reveal scenes I have ever seen. Brilliantly acted and filmed. It was like a mystery novel with the participants slowing piecing the puzzle together as they were getting drunk and reflecting. Well, it got me thinking what are some other quality funeral/wake/eulogy movie scenes. |
I always liked the one in Royal Tenenbaums.

The Hazing(1970's). Seldom seen these days. Starred Jeff East as a guy who joins a fraternity. He and another pledge(Charles Martin Smith?) are taken out one night for some kind of initiation prank and something goes wrong, the pledge played by Smith dies. The senior frat guys get East to go along with a cover-up. They make up some story to tell the cops. The East character really starts to freak out as the movie progresses, with all the police interviews, paranoia over getting cauight, and guilt. The next to last scene in the movie is the funeral of the pledge who died. As East walks up to the coffin, really losing it, Smith sits up in his coffin, holds out his hand and says, "Welcome to Sigma Alpha Ki". The whole thing was a prank. The last scene of the movie has the frat house being bulldozed by East's brother who owns a construction company. Would love to see this again.

The funeral procession at the beginning of Othello (1952). Not all that long, but visually very impressive.
The scene in Red River where John Wayne is delivering the eulogy. Supposedly director Howard Hawks noticed clouds moving in and motioned for JW to speed up; the camera captured the striking visual effect of the clouds breaking up the light on the ground. Again, brief but visually interesting. |

Looking for pointers? Anyway, there's a comedy out called 'Eulogy' you might want to check out.

Ditto on "Big Chill." Also, the movie "Eulogy" which is, as it sounds, all about a funeral, is really funny and touching.
