I like this choice. A leaner, meaner Bond.

sabre 10-14-05 02:19 PM

watched the local new york news, I had to laugh at the reaction of the news people to this story. kinda like this guy is going to be james bond, your kidding me right. Bad choice. the average person sees this guy and is like no way is this guy james bond. i am all for a grittier james bond, a new james bond with a unknown might not be bad. but this guy is not james bond.

Geofferson 10-14-05 02:24 PM

Regarding Casino Royale, my concern is not over Daniel Craig (I think he's a fine choice), but rather the director Martin Campbell.

Groucho 10-14-05 02:27 PM

I'm not sure what's wrong with Martin Campbell. He gave us GoldenEye.

Shannon Nutt 10-14-05 02:37 PM

I wonder who they'll hire as a Bond girl to make Craig look more appealing...perhaps Bea Arthur? :)

Michael Corvin 10-14-05 02:39 PM

Didn't Pierce want to take the franchise in a different direction as well? Get back to the spy roots, less campy type film? Irony is a bitch.

Incidently, I don't know if it's been mentioned, but SONY desperately wanted Pierce back for this movie...but I guess Broccoli has final say on who plays the character and she's got some kind of obsession with Craig.

Well if this is a big flop, they might get their foot in the door input-wise for Pierce. After this though, I bet he wouldn't touch the franchise with a ten foot pole.

When you see LEGEND OF ZORRO, and you get the part where Tornado burps after drinking a bottle of wine, you'll know.

Andalusian Dog 10-14-05 05:22 PM

it's disappointing how some of you are slagging off Craig simply based on his looks alone. -ohbfrank- have you ever even considered if the guy can act? at the very least, give him the opportunity to prove himself in "Casino Royale" before you judge him. -wink-

lukewarmwater 10-14-05 06:44 PM

I think daniel craig as james bond in casino royale is fucking spot on.

The studio and directors history leave me with no faith in this project.

No bond film has failed to make a profit, even Tim Dalton films did better business overseas. Roger moore's first 2 films were not that successful in the US, only when he made his 3rd, he became bigger.
Goldeneye made 70 million in the US, DAD made 150 million in the US, double the amount.

So the first actor's Bond film normally doesnt set the box office on fire, the worlds gets used to him, then in his 2nd and 3rd attempts, he's gets popular, that's the pattern. Connery/Moore, brosnan got to do over 3, Dalton was unlucky with the bond law suits which delayed his 3rd bond film, so we would never have known if he progressed further, remember dalton's films were released in the summer in big competition, since then brosnan's films were released in the fall.

But cut it how you want, it'll be a bad bet to bet against it doing decently. But surely of cource Brosnan would of raked in more money.
Who knows if it doesn't do well, they'll get brosnan to do a connery diamonds are forever and return:D

rennervision 10-14-05 08:27 PM

Well, CNN is reporting only 10% approve of Daniel Craig, so I'm recommending Sony releases Casino Royale around February or September.

Pierce Brosnan launches attack at James Bond producers

quote
He said: "I was just getting the hang of it, you know? But they wanted to go younger. They wanted to reinvigorate the part."

"Whether they made the right choice, who knows?", he added,

"They're probably scared shitless, thinking, ‘What have we done?’"

Although Brosnan wishes Daniel Craig well, "go for it" he said. But the producers should of talked to him at least in person, brosnan got a phone call earlier in the year, saying you won't be back. What a way to end the reign of his tenture.

Legolas 10-15-05 08:56 PM

Michael G. Wilson is an idiot. Changing actors isn't going to change the ineptness of the people in charge of the 007 franchise. If he wants fresh life, he should find someone to replace himself.

Gutz 10-15-05 09:22 PM

Peeps, give this guy a chance. I've seen 5 his movies and the guy can act. I'm sure there was a reason for such casting. For the role auditioned what? 30 actors?

You have to face it, Bond movies are world phenomenon and no matter who you cast, the film WILL MAKE MONEY regardless of "007" actor.

Brosnan, got punk'd because he asked $ 30 mil for the new Casino Royale. Idiot. Greedy bastard :)

Anyway, I think Daniel Craig is not the best choice for the role, however, let's not jump to conclusions before watching his debut 007 movie.

For the rest of haters, suck it up guys, and let's wait for 2006.

scott shelton 10-15-05 09:26 PM

All this talk of "freshness" and "younger" just baffles me.

It would be one thing if the last film had bombed, but to reboot after DIE ANOTHER DAY's smashing success? It seem insane.

And it's not like the production is saving too many pennies by doing this. The new film is still gonna cost 100mil.

I like Craig, but it doesn't feel like the right time for a complete overhaul.

Rogue588 10-16-05 12:32 AM

I guess it's refreshing to see that Hollywood [or at least the Bond people] think 39 is "younger". Then again, i'm sure that's just where male actors are concerned..

wm lopez 10-16-05 05:53 AM

Remember guys they picked him.
We have had many types of Bond movies.
Maybe now they are going for the killer Bond instead of ladies man Bond.

Fincher Fan 10-16-05 06:33 AM

I have my doubts but I'll wait until I see a trailer.

jiggawhat 10-16-05 12:09 PM

I'm not happy with this choice at all. To me, he just doesn't have the Bond look.

Legolas 10-16-05 12:35 PM

I don't understand the "younger" talk either, especially when Craig LOOKS older than Brosnan.

Terrell 10-16-05 04:38 PM

DRG 10-16-05 06:22 PM

The combo of a new "iffy" Bond with a darker tone is going to bad news box office wise. They tried this with Licence to Kill and that flopped. And Dalton at least had one prior go at it, although he wasn't truly accepted as Bond yet. They will need to cast some bigger names as the villain and Bond girl to sell this to mainstream audiences, but then they will run the risk of overshadowing Bond completely.

Legolas 10-16-05 06:25 PM

^ Some people subscribe to the Good Bond/Bad Bond theory, where the successor to a good Bond (Lazenby, Dalton) gets rejected but their successor gets accepted. Maybe Christian Bale will still want to do Bond after Craig is finished.

Not sure how that is an attack. Just voicing his displeasure about the way it was handled. It's not like he said they made a bad choice. I tend to agree with him.

Johnny Depp, Dennis Quaid, Chris Cooper & Ed Harris can all act as well. Doesn't mean I want them as James Bond.

$30 mil is high, if there is any truth to that rumor at all. But wouldn't that be a drop in the bucket compared to the billions of dollars he has raked in during his tenure as Bond?

riley_dude 10-17-05 02:23 PM

Wow. That's the first time I have heard that rumor. Brosnan has made it sound (in print) that he is such the victim.
