Re: "Oldboy"...see it now!

really excited for Sympathy for Lady Vengeance tonight. i've seen both versions: the color and fade to b/w. both great, but the over-the-top stylism that Park uses for this one lends itself better to the color version i think. i remember it just popped when i first saw it (and that was on DVD, can't imagine the the bluray looking less spectacular). plus, this is the more fun one in the series.

And yet, this is not the most surprising Oldboy appearance in the last few weeks. That belongs to ...

Yes, the Animaniacs revival has an Oldboy reference in the first episode.

Don’t get the love for the second and third film in this trilogy. I guess I’m in the minority, for me Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is the best one.

I'm really glad for the success of Oldboy (the film) led for Western audiences to search and discover other South Korean films and seems that Oldboy (DVD Talk member) enjoys it tremendously but for him to state 15 years after promising us a review that it is the best "foreign and domestic film" is misguided.

The Hollywood remake with Josh Brolin isn't bad at all.

I assumed this was a thread where we told Oldboy what to watch.

After being kidnapped and imprisoned for fifteen years, Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik) is released, only to find that he must find his captor in five days.

In Theaters August 16
Restored and Remastered

A Film by Park Chan-wook
Starring Choi Min-sik, Yoo Ji-tae, Kang Hye-jeong

Neon acquired the US distribution rights last year and are re-releasing it in theatres for the 20th anniversary. I wonder if they will license to Criterion for a disc or put it out themselves via their Decal line. But, I assume, most people who are interested in this film and the trilogy already have the Arrow releases.

I thought this might be a thread where we tell Oldboy what to see.

Like "A Serbian Film" Oldboy, see it now!

That was a terrible trailer, but I look forward to seeing this in theaters.

Fantastic movie, though I have to admit I have never had any urge to revisit it.

I bought the DVD tin out of DVDTalk peer pressure years ago and watched it once.

With the exception of a few memorable scenes (the hallway fight, live octopus) I thought it was a mediocre movie. The “twist” didn’t affect me like it probably should have.

To be fair, the twist is "Just a Tuesday" in some parts of the country.

Now, this I would see in theaters. Seen it probably 3-4 times, but never on big screen. I would make this my 3rd film in over 3 years seen in theaters. If playing by me that is.

I remember when I saw this so many years ago. I knew a twist was coming the moment he met the girl. The film kept hammering home (no pun intended) that a big reveal was forthcoming. But it kept dangling that carrot so long that by the time it came, I no longer cared. Really overrated movie. The hallway fight was fun at least.

I remember that film called "Repo Men" did a hyperstylized homage to Oldboy's hallway fight. It was awesome in its own right.

I feel the same way. I needed a little bit longer to see the twist coming, but when it was revealed it was no suprise to me. My main problem was the hype surrounding the movie. I was expecting more. It was a really solid revenge movie, but to me it's not the instant classic and the remake isn't worse than the original, but even less surprising.

I thought it was terrible - Imperioli's face when he died was beyond hammy - can't believe they left that in.
