40-Year-Old Virgin: False Advertising?

I saw an ad touting that 40-Year-Old Virgin was the "best reviewed movie of the year" according to RottenTomatoes.

I just checked their site, and it's actually #31: Link

So, what gives?

it probably WAS the highest rated right when it came out and they're just using that. they knew it wouldn't last, but I think they can get away with it since that's what it was when the ad was made? probably not. I was surprised that Red Eye was #3 or whatever on that tv ad, so I knew the list was probably bogus.

There's an awful lot of reviews for ...Virgin, a lot more than a good few of the films in the top reaches. As it was coming out, with five or six reviews, all positive, it was probably 100% fresh.

I think they're referring to the sophisticated grammar usage and eloquent prose style of the reviews.

It can't be the number of reviews since Kung Fu Hustle has 161 (15 more than 40-Year-Old Virgin).

Seems they're making some kind of distinction from the first 30 films listed by distribution. I can see it being the widest released picture of those 31 (just my assumption).

But there's some kind of qualifier at hand in order for them to make that claim.

Kind of like a tag line I saw for The Constant Gardener which said it was "the best reviewed thriller of the year".

of the top 31 films listed, only two were put into wide release (March of the Penguins and Kung Fu Hustle). Kung Fu Hustle is technically a 2004 film and March of the Penguins is a documentary. Plus both were foreign and started in limited release.

I think the hook they were going for was "of all these big movies, Virgin got the best reviews". People would might've thought it was just another dumb sex comedy along the lines of Deuce Bigalow would see Star Wars and Batman and War of the Worlds on there and think "Wow, so it's NOT just some dumb comedy after all!" and may consider going.

"Best reviewed" doesn't mean best movie. It doesn't have anything to do with the film at all. It just has the best reviews (good or bad doesn't matter). Heh...

I read the article at Rotten Tomatoes where they called it that, and it said they were only counting movies that opened in wide release. All the other movies all opened in limited release, and most of them ended there as well except for Kung Fu Hustle and March of the Penguins.

Here's the article:

Very misleading since its only the best reviewed mainstream Hollywood movie of the year. I guess the people doing the ad don't consider anything not made by a major studio a film. Any wonder stuff like Underclassman gets a green light?

Couldn't happen to a cooler comedy. I'm thrilled that critics & moviegoers are so enthusiastic about this movie.

Re: 40-Year-Old Virgin: False Advertising?

Actor Shelley Malil (The 40-Year-Old Virgin) was found guilty of attempted murder on Thursday for stabbing his girlfriend more than 20 times in 2008, People reports. Malil claimed he accidentally stabbed Kendra Beebe in her San Marcos, Calif., home, mistaking her for an attacker in the dark. Witnesses testified that the two had an argument at the beach the day before the stabbing.

The actor’s lawyer argued for attempted voluntary manslaughter, not murder, saying his client acted in the heat of passion when he arrived at Beebe’s home and found her in the backyard with another man.

Malil will be sentenced on Nov. 18 and faces 21 years to life in prison.

You should win 9-0. A movie can't be the "best reviewed of the year" if five years later one of its bit actors is convicted of attempted murder. That's just good science.

He stabbed her over twenty times and she lived? That's impressive.

Either that guy is really good at stabbing, or really, really bad at it.
