Scenes that DO NOT need CGI or Dummies, but use them anyway....
 

Hey all,

I can't stand when a movie uses CGI or a body Dummy when one is absolutely not necessary. It totally detracts form the believablility of the scene/movie.

Ok, I just thought of one. In Idle Hands when Pnub gets his head cut off, there is a scene where it's in a chair. The camera cuts to a closeup of the head looking around -- but it's a poorly done mechanical head. Ok, either leave that shot out, or cut a hole in the chair....

But you know what I mean.....Anyone have any examples....?

What a coincidence that you started a thread on this and then right in the middle of your original post, you thought of an example.

As far as I'm concerned, in a world of cinema saturated with unnecessary CGI, the one that pisses me off the most is close-ups of Yoda's face in Episodes II and III, when a perfectly good, even more emotive puppet served for Episodes V and VI. I really can't stand it and to think of the money and time that went into creating something that could have been done so easily and cost-effectively the 1980s way...ugh...

Blade part Deux, that rediculous CG fight scene where he's fighting that vampire dude with the nightvision goggles.

BuddyRevell's observation reminded me of another--digital Neo/Multiple Agent Smiths fight in the alleyway in THE MATRIX RELOADED...gee, Misters Wachowski, I sure can't tell when we go from live action to CGI here at all...:rolleyes:

The thread is about using CGI (or dummies) where they are not needed, not bad CGI. As for Matrix Reloaded, in the parts of the fight scene where the transition to CGI is obvious, it's those parts that couldn't have been done any other way.

I call bullshit--there's nothing any more complicated to be found here than in the outstanding fight choreography on display in the original THE MATRIX, which (other than wire removal) didn't cop out halfway through with cheesy CGI...

DVDtalk is for talking about DVDs, Movie Talk is for talking about movies, even if that movie is available on DVD.

i was just thinking of that. I watched it for the first time since i got y big screen and the extra inches absolutly killed tha scene. Once you start getting more detail, it is easy to tear that scene apart. That would get my vote.

Too bad you picked the wrong one ;) As majorjoe23 pointed out if it's a generic question about movies (which this qualifies more as) it belongs in Movie Talk.

Any time CGI blood is used.

Even Guillermo del Toro agreed on this.

Yes, particularly in the Wayne Brady episode of Chappelle's Show when Brady shoots Donnell Rawlings. Would it have killed them to use squibs?

The Ring Two - Just saw this terrible movie, and they used CG deer. Honestly, they couldn't find trained deer to do the scene?

Day After Tomorrow - CG wolves.
