I wasn't aware there was a Sam Mendes film that wasn't.

This is a movie. Based on a book. I remember seeing the author on Conan a few years back. Good interview. But I kind of forgot about the book.

...

From IMDB.

Jarhead (the self-imposed moniker of the Marines) follows "Swoff" (Gyllenhaal), a third-generation enlistee, from a sobering stint in boot camp to active duty, sporting a sniper's rifle and a hundred-pound ruck on his back through Middle East deserts with no cover from intolerable heat or from Iraqi soldiers, always potentially just over the next horizon. Swoff and his fellow Marines sustain themselves with sardonic humanity and wicked comedy on blazing desert fields in a country they don't understand against an enemy they can't see for a cause they don't fully fathom... Foxx portrays Sergeant Sykes, a Marine lifer who heads up Swofford's scout/sniper platoon, while Sarsgaard is Swoff's friend and mentor, Troy, a die-hard member of STA-their elite Marine Unit.

While it may not have any inidication of the movie, that is a horrible tagline.

It will be interesting to see how Sam Mendes can do without Conrad Hall as his D.P. The cinematography of his last two movies contributed greatly to my enjoyment of them, I hope he can still do well without that net.

It will be interesting, I like both American Beauty and Road to Perdition because they're great to look at. Storywise? Ehh..

Hall was amazing, but Roger Deakins is one of the best DPs in the world too.

agree with the concern of D.P. change... however the screenwriting on American Beauty was awesome on it's own too.

Agree about the writing for AB. However, Road to Perdition's appeal was almost 90% in the way it was shot. Almost every frame could have passed for a painting in the film.

are you guys judging this on the presumption that "welcome to the suck" is exploiting popular internet vernacular? my understanding is that "the suck" is cold war era slang for the marine corp... as in FTS, or "fuck the suck".

no, i'm right...

No, I'm pretty sure we all knew it was some sort of military phrase. It's still pretty crappy for a tagline.

I kind of like the tag-line myself.

Anyhow - I've been waiting to see this for over a year. Love that one-sheet, too.

I liked the book, cool to see it has been made into a motion picture.
