Great scenes with music

What scenes can you remember that were already great yet only augmented by memorable music? If paired right these scenes can be utterly sublime to watch.

The Good, The Bad, the Ugly, you hear that famous whistling tune composed for the film, yet that's all you hear except for the very end when the camera pans across to The Man with No Name who's riding off through the shrubs into the desert. You finally hear the end of the song, it is enormously epic in scope and quite the definition of an epic.

Casino when Ace sees Ginger for the first time after she just created chaos near a table, in slow motion as she's walking away and glances at him with the song "Love is Strange" playing.

The Big Lewbowski, The Jesus' bowling entrance, when he turns around and does his victory dance and Hotel California is blasting in the background.

Ofcourse well known Apocalypse Now's surrealistic entrance accompanied by Morrison's The Doors. As well as Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries in the helicopter attack are very memorable.

In The Matrix when Neo

becomes "The One" after getting shot
and the melody along with it.

"Death Rides a Horse","The Mercenary", and "Return of Joe". All 3 Morricone-scored pieces were put to better use in Kill Bill than they're original appearances in various spaghetti westerns.

Well...Now that I think of it, "Mercenary"s setting in the bullring works, but the

coffin breakout
has a more triumphant feel.

The Spy Who Loved Me in the pre-credit sequence when he ski's off the edge and then falls for like half a minute then his chute opens with the massive Union Jack and then two hands close on the chute with the song "nobody does it better", mostly for the string tune in the beginning.

The Infidel 08-04-05 08:41 PM

Tommy Boy - "I'm Sorry"

The Bus 08-04-05 08:54 PM

When Nico begins to sing in Royal Tenenbaums as Gwyneth walks off the bus.

David Bowie's "Queen Bitch" at the end of Life Aquatic.

jaeufraser 08-04-05 08:55 PM

The nightclub entrance in Goodfellas, with "Then He Kissed Me" by The Crystals.

The ear scene with "Stuck in the Middle With You."

The initial space flight set to "The Blue Danube."

And everybody loves "Eye of the Tiger." Run up that mountain Rocky, and kill that ruskie!

You stole my post!!!! :grunt:

"Singing in the Rain" and Beethoven, cannot remember the movement, Ode to Joy, maybe? both from A Clockwork Orange. And a weird one....."Build Me Up Buttercup" from the elevator scene in Mallrats. Evertime I hear this, the original, on an oldies station I can't help but chuckle.

I'm kinda partial to the end of Donnie Darko with Mad World

gmal2003 08-04-05 09:58 PM

Tears for Fear's "Head over Heels" in the opening high school scene on Donnie Darko

Malcolm McClaren's (sp?) "About Her" when the bride is in the house with Bill near the end of Kill Bill Vol. II

Ninacy Sinatra's "Bang, Bang" in the opening sequence of Kill Bill Vol. I

I love in the royal Tenenbaums the beginning, with the instrumental Hey Jude playing, while Alec Baldwin is narrating and the camera just flows beautifully to the music.

Leeloo escaping from the lab in The Fifth Element. The soundtrack to that was really cool.

The one that immediately came to mind for me is Santo & Johnny's instrumental "Sleep Walk" at the end of La Bamba. Powerful stuff :(

My response can be had in this existing thread.

The "A Quick One While He's Away" revenge sequence in Rushmore.

wendersfan 08-05-05 12:28 PM

I think the big fight scene in Le Mepris between Piccoli and Bardot is the obvious choice. The music adds a haunting finality to the proceedings.

Kal-El 08-05-05 12:41 PM

Off the top of my head:

The Helicopter rescue from Superman: The Movie
Asteroid Chase Scene in Empire
3-way duel in Phantom Menace with Duel of the Fates playing
"I'm the King of the World!!!" from Titanic

dvduser6 08-05-05 12:49 PM

Patricia Arquette's character getting out of her car to Lou Reed's "This Magic Moment" from Lost Highway.

Most have been said, but Derek and the Domino's "Layla" during all the murder scenes in Goodfellas. I don't think there's anyone in film today who uses music as well as Scorsese.

Another scene that stands out for me is the music that's played in the first Batman when he's just rescued vicki and they're driving to the batcave.

I admit Scorsese uses music very well, but Wong Kar-Wai, Wes Anderson, and Aki Kaurismaki also use it to great advantage.

The bus scene with Tiny Dancer in the movie Almost Famous.

pdinosaur 08-05-05 01:36 PM

"Mad World" from Donnie Darko
"When Johnny Came Marching Home Again" from Die Hard with a Vengeance
"This Used to be my Playground" from A League of their Own
"Happy Worker" from Toys (I have to give Tori Amos all the love I can)
"The Hands that Built America" from Gangs of New York
I feel it's my duty to say something about the Imperial March.

Unchained Melody

The scene in Ghost with Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze w/ the clay making pots with that song playing in the background. Or, something along those lines. Maybe I am also remembering the scence from one of those naked gun movies -confused- .

Mr. Cinema 08-05-05 07:14 PM

My favorite has to be all scenes with music in "Collateral".

The nightclub scene with that techno music and the part that featured Audioslave during one of the cab driving sequences. This movie had a great soundtrack!

Troy Stiffler 08-05-05 08:29 PM

Miss Misery in Good Will Hunting. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that song/shot.

House of the Rising Sun in Casino (especially the part with Stone against the wall).

"Space Lion", from Cowboy Bebop's "Jupiter Jazz" episode is absolutely unforgettable.
