Time Span for the Day After Tomorrow

Saw The Day After Tomorrow last night. Thought it was okay, if a touch too over-serious (I come from the Irwin Allen school of disaster flicking).

I have found myself in a debate this morning with a co-worker regarding the time span of the main part of the story, from the point when Dennis Quaid drives his son to the airport to the end of the film.

My co-worker says that it covers weeks...I say only days.

Can anyone who has seen this more than once provide some insight to the film's logical clock?

I'm still perplexed how someone can walk by foot from Philadelphia to New York in sub-arctic temps in just a couple of days.

Any insight is appreciated.

I percieved as being about a week, so therefore
Spoiler:
it took him a few days to travel to his family

given philly to ny is 100 miles and their experience in extreme climates, i wouldn't see it as implausible.

you might consider the meteorological factors in determining time here as well.
