The Gladiator is the friends we made along the way.

From director Ridley Scott, watch the new Official Trailer for #GladiatorII starring Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Connie Nielsen, Joseph Quinn, and Fred Hechinger - Only in theatres November 22.

Looks good but the marketing department just can't help themselves by using shitty hip-hop remixes to try and sell an epic.

Hip Hop didn't exist in gladiator times... but neither did orchestral music.

That’s looks good, shitty trailer music aside.

So far I’m not sold on Mescal. He doesn’t seem to have the presence that Russell Crowe brought. I was halfway through the trailer before I realized that guy was supposed to be the main character.

Looks like Denzel is more pivotal than I was expecting. Wonder if his part was originally written for Djimon Hounsou's character.

I think it looks good. And Paul Mescal is the real deal. I'm fairly certain he'll be great in this.

They make Pedro Pascal's character look pretty reasonable and sensible in that trailer, though he's set up like the big bad. I wonder if they'll have him turn to the light side at the end. Those Emperor boys look like total c***s.

Looks like it could be decent, but I always thought the original was overrated so I will go in with lower expectations than some.

I am willing to bet that this will be 45 minutes to an hour too long and rely on CG blood too much. I hope I am wrong on both counts.

Trailer wasn't quite what I hoped for, but the footage all looks great. So Lucius is the main character after all, and was sent away by his mother after the first film.

I do really like the warm lighting of Rome here, the first had that very heavy filtered look (I remember Ebert hated it), I'm not sure if that was just Ridley's style at the time or if it was easier to blend the various elements... I didn't mind it but I'm not sad to see it go.

In a world where Gladiators fought to the death to hip hop music...comes a sequel no one wanted...

I mean this thread is 19 years old. I don't think it's completely accurate to say nobody wanted a sequel to this film.

Even before the misguided needle drop, something felt off about the trailer. It just all seems both unnecessary and misguided. It doesn't help that the lead does not command the screen in any part of that trailer.

Also, not digging what I am seeing of Denzel Washington here. His performance comes across as too contemporary. I'll attribute that to bad direction from Scott, because Washington is no hack. Mind you, neither is Scott, but that performance doesn't look phoned in but rather something intentionally chosen. And I doubt Scott is hands off with his actors.

Such a cliched knee jerk reaction. No movie or sequel “needs” to be made. Someone smarter than everyone on this board got paid and managed to convince Paramount to pay $300M to get it made.

No one asked for Top Gun Maverick (a sequel to a 36 year old movie), but that ended up being the biggest hit of 2022 and one of the highest grossing movies of all-time. Not saying Gladiator II will match that, but it's done and we'll see how it does this Fall.

Plenty bad expensive movies have been made because someone convinced others it'd be a worthwhile investment. And they don't necessarily have to be smarter than anyone else. Just persuasive enough to make it seem like they even know about what they're convincing others to be a good idea.

Re: Gladiator II (2024, D: Scott) S: Mescal, Washington, Pascal

I will admit that Scott has been very hit and miss as a director.

I don't think he's had a critical and audience liked hit since maybe The Martian?

He turns 87 in November and there are zero signs he's slowing down. He's just a salty old man who's a workaholic.

Yeah, Denzel looks horribly miscast here.

Damn, I thought this was gonna be a sequel to the James Marshall/Cuba Gooding Jr. movie.
