I’ve never heard of Mescal. He looks like he fits the role though.

He's boyfriend / maybe-fiance of singer Phoebe Bridgers, so my daughter talks to me about him and them as a couple constantly.
Normal People is a very good limited series though.

Kind of funny that he had all these somewhat esoteric ideas for a sequel and looks like they are going forward with something that is pretty straightforward.

Well, the first of the five stages of grief is denial. Prepare yourself for anger.

re: Gladiator II (2024, D: Scott) S: Mescal, Washington, Pascal

Barry Keoghan is in negotiations to join the cast of Paramount’s sequel to Gladiator that has Ridley Scott returning to direct and Paul Mescal set to star.

Scott also will produce, along with Scott Free President Michael Pruss as well as Doug Wick & Lucy Fisher via Red Wagon Entertainment. David Scarpa penned the script.

Also returning from the original film are costume designer Janty Yates and production designer Arthur Max. The new film follows the 2000 blockbuster Gladiator, which earned over $460M in worldwide box office and was nominated for 12 Academy Awards, winning five including Best Picture.

Keoghan is expected to play Emperor Geta if a deal closes.

Keoghan is coming off a best supporting actor Oscar nomination for the 1920s-set The Banshees of Inisherin. Next up he can be seen in Emerald Fennell’s Saltburn opposite Jacob Elordi and is currently shooting Trey Edward Shults’s latest movie, which also stars Jenna Ortega and The Weeknd.

He is repped by WME, Entertainment 360 and Sloane Offer. Giant Freakin Robot first reported the news.

It's been many many years since I watched the original movie. I need to re-visit it at some point. I do have the BD in the closet somewhere.

Washington is a good get to add some star power to this.

Getting more excited about this. Denzel as a co-lead is a surprise to be sure(you know the rest!) but I wonder if that means he'll be taking over a mentor role that Djimon wasn't available for? They have to get Connie Nielson - absolutely need her. Otherwise there really isn't any connective tissue to the first film, it's essentially a sequel in name only...which is not as exciting.

Great news. Glad that they're bringing Nielsen back. Hope they bring back Digmon Hounsou as well.
Joseph Quinn has parlayed his turn on Stranger Things to several prime jobs. Good for him.

So is this meant to be a sequel? Or is a new gladiator in the same universe? Sans Crowe of course.

It's a sequel. Mescal is playing a grown version of Lucius from the first film.

Just how long did the games last in Rome? This is a great cast and it's cool that Scott is returning to direct, I just hope he can complete it as he's up there in the years.

I like May Calamawy. Good for her.

Sucks about Keoghan though.
EXCLUSIVE: Paramount’s sequel to the Oscar-winning hit Gladiator is rounding out its cast as sources tell Deadline the untitled pic has added May Calamawy, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, Peter Mensah and Matt Lucas.

Also in talks to join the remaining cast is Fred Hechinger (The White Lotus), who is in negotiations to play Emperor Geta. Barry Keoghan was in negotiations to play the Geta character, but scheduling conflicts forced him to fall out of the project.

Some rumors are going around that we could get a promo during the Super Bowl.

Ridley had said a good portion of the film was edited during the strike.
