Anime help?
I've decided to get a few more anime for my collection.
These were excellent Nausicca Spirited Away Kiki's Delivery Service Castle In The Sky These Good Animatrix Porco Rosso This one OK The Cat Returns This one sucks Agent Aika - Final Conflict I guess I like movies more than a collection of short stories. Also, I don't care for the excessive 'fan service' like in Aika. My favorite genres would be genres sci-fi, drama, epic, fantasy, gangster, suspense, and westerns. What types of ideas do you guys/gals have in how I should expand my collection? Thanks for your input. |
I kinda like Urotsukidoji. :D
nah nah.. I kid I kid... only joke, no get habuts. Just pick up the other Miyazaki films.. Mononoke Hime is sorta similar to Nausicca. |

My personal favorite are Akira, Ninja Scroll and Vampire Hunter D along with some of the Miyazaki films you mentioned above. Another suggestion is to check out Grave of the Fireflies. It deals with a brother and sister during WWII and their struggle to survive after the bombings (I forget what city its supposed to be). If you want it drama, this one has it. |
You never see it listed anywhere, but of the movie-length anime, I enjoyed
A Wind Named Amnesia. It's basically post apocalyptic-type scifi. Millenium Actress was good, although a little surreal and somewhat slow. I'm more into series than movies. |
FLCL = fooly cooly is pretty good. Sexy, funny, lots of action, good music. its all good.

Others:
Jin-Roh is good. Ghost in the Shell is good. Ghost in the Shell 2 is amazing (I actually like it more than the first one). Castle of Cagliostro is fun to watch and is probably my favorite action/adventure/comedy. Metropolis has an amazing look and a fairly good plot. Terrible pacing, though. Macross Plus is sort of a guilty pleasure of mine. Patlabor 1 and especially Patlabor 2 are good. |
Thanks again everyone.
Akira sounds excellent and a must have. Is the SE worth the extra $10? Ninja Scroll the movie sound good not sure about the series collection though. A Wind Named Amnesia also I like his other work so, I'll give Mononoke Hime a try too. Anyway I'll must likely get the four movies. Any thoughts about the Akira SE or regular? Edit to add: Castle of Cagliostro does look good. So that should round out my order |
Vampire Hunter D:Bloodlust
Ninja Scroll's(not the series) Ghost in the Shell AppleSeed(for eye candy, and Sci-Fi) Akira |

Ghost in the Shell (movie)
Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex Ghost in the Shell 2 Akira Cowboy Bebop (movie and tv show) Paranoia Agent (Mystery type stuff) Fullmetal Alchemist (Cool anime) Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust Ninja Scroll (movie) Serial Experiments Lain (Really weird) I'm just starting to get into anime too. Definately check out the titles listed above. Some really great stuff there. |
At first I just got the movies and I finally got into the series with Neon Genesis Evangelion. I LOVE the series now - there's some real cheapies too with the ADV Essential Anime collections (I got Bubblegum Crisis 1-3, Martian Successor Nadesico 1-3 and Cutey Honey for $11 each for 9-10 episodes). If you go with the normal distribution of most series you're looking at $80 to over $100 unfortunately. Hopefully with the popularity of this genre these prices may come down a little.

You seem to have the opposite taste as me when it comes to anime,so i would also recommend Akira to you.

Well since all of your favorites tend to be fantasy shows, I'd suggest:
Pretear (4 disk magical girl type show with tons of drama and likeable characters) Magic Users Club (Fantasy comedy (3/7 disks). You should be able to find the single disks cheap, or pick up the box set. The first 12 episodes are much better than the continuation. Photon (single disk) Very silly chase style adventure set on a desert planet. Cardcaptor Sakura (18 disks of tv episodes plus 2 movies) It's a major commitment, but worth it. Its a bit on the cute side, but I've seen even hardcore fighting/mecha fans fall for this series. Cagliostro Castle (as previously mentioned) Hand Maid May (3 disks) A little fanservicey, but it still has a sweet story, so it doesn't seem so bad. |
One of my favorite is Neon Genesis Evangeleon series. I also enjoyed Love Hina series.

Here would be my suggestions....also being a fan of sci-fi and action...
Princess Mononoke Escaflowne Movie (watch the series if you like the movie) Cowboy Bebop Movie (definitely watch the series, its great!) If you want to take the plunge into series, as opposed to movies...I would suggest the above, as well as Outlaw Star Trigun Orphen Berserk That should get you started.... |
