Truffaut or Godard?
 

Which French new-wave director do you prefer?

I'm a Truffaut whore, but that's not to say I don't also like a lot of Godard as well.........

Godard - He made 'Les Mepris', my all time fav.

He also made 'Breathless'. Jean Seberg - iconic look!

This thread just made me realize I haven't seen a single movie by either. Recommendations? (I definately have to see the 400 blows)

Although there are several Godard films that I like a lot, when he misses he is unendurable - <i>Aphaville</i> and <i>Notre Musique</i> come to mind.

Truffaut, on the other hand, has never made me suffer - even his misfires manage to provide some rewards for the viewer - and his best are simply masterpieces.

Truffaut's love of movies comes through in everything he does, whereas in many Godard pieces, what comes through is Godard's love of Godard.

Notre Musique unendurable? No, these are unendurable: The Green Room, Jules et Jim, The Man Who Loved Women, Love on the Run, Bed & Board.

While Truffaut's career trajectory headed toward the cheesy and over-affectedness, Godard has always stubbornly refused to sellout - thank god.

I agree. Godard might not have sold out but the man that has brought so much to cinema has become trapped within is own system and is just repeating himself. Although I somewhat liked it, you leave Notre Musique with the impression that Godard has said that "man is the worst enemy of man" a thousand times before, and better.
