I also saw a recent issue of GamePro that featured a pic they claimed was from a Doom movie. Seemed legit as it was alongside pics of Bloodrayne and other pics of videogame-based movies.

I'd rather see a Red and Blue movie to be perfectly honest.

Big article in the NY Times about the movie today. Some absolutely ridiculous demands from Microsoft going into the negotiations with the studios; they were lucky to get a deal at all.

I'm kinda glad MS was stubborn on this one. Considering how much all the past video game movies have sucked. MK was probably the only decent videogame movie ever.

Microsoft shouldn't be stubborn, it's the studios that are going to lose money.

Regardless of the horrible track record that video game movies have in terms of quality, this is one franchise that I think can well commerially. I think the fan base is big enough, and the type of film accessible enough (big budget scifi action) to make for a high grossing film.

If Tomb Raider showed anything, you don't have to be a good movie to make money. That film opened big and managed a nice 275 million worldwide gross. If this is pg-13, I imagine it'll have no problem generating the type of business that film did, if not more. Halo is, imo, a franchise that rivals Tomb Raider in popularity (that is, when Tomb Raider was popular).

So, in all honesty, I think Microsoft does have a property that has a lot of potential, at least commercially. As a film, they could definately make a fun action film out of it but I wouldn't hold my breath quite yet.

Microsoft did it the smart way. Rather than just signing away the film rights and letting a studio do god knows what to their bread and butter franchise. They hired their own writer to pen a script that both they and the game developers were happy with. Then they shopped the project to the studios. This is no guarantee that the end movie wont suck. But at least this way they some control over the final product.

I hope they keep a similar soundtrack and feel. Thing I liked about the game is that although it was a awesome action game the feel of it was very sci-fi. I really like the soundtrack to it too. I hope they don't just put in some punk rock in it or something.

Halo movie coming to big screen
2005-08-25 02:11:53

TORONTO -- Plans to get Master Chief on the big screen are well underway, it appears.

Bungie Studios, developer of the video game hits Halo and Halo 2, says Microsoft has struck a partnership with Universal and 20th Century Fox to make a Halo movie slated for release in 2007.

The initial script is done, written by Alex Garland, whose writing credits include the movie 28 Days Later and the book The Beach (made into a movie with Leonardo DiCaprio).

Variety.com says Garland was paid $1 million US by Microsoft for his work on Halo.

In a posting on Bungie.net, Bungie writer and director of cinematics Joseph Staten says he was blown away by Garland's initial draft.

"How did that draft turn out? Let me put it this way: I wrote the script for both Halo games, but as Alex's interpretation rumbled from one climax to the next I found myself wondering 'Damn! How's the Chief gonna fight his way outta this?' Only to follow up a few pages later with: 'Oh man, I can't wait to see that on screen!' Good stuff.

Bungie and Microsoft have assembled "an exhaustive companion" on the Halo universe to accompany the script during the film's production.

I don't usually get up for movie based on video games (let's face it . . . they don't have a good track record), but for some reason, I'm kind of psyched for this one.

I'm gonna have a hard time buying into the movie since it's likely (I'm not sure about this) the original voice actors won't be used.

..........and since it's likely it will suck. Hollywood needs to cool with the godawful videogame films. The track record is terrible. In fact, I've never seen a good film based on a videogame.

I'm a fan of Halo... spent many many hours playing and it's a blast.

I really have no interest in a movie based on the game.... at the moment. A good cast and a decent trailer might change my mind... but the odds are stacked against it.

Frankly, considering that the Halo concept is such a obvious rip-off of his Ringworld concept, I think Larry Niven should sue Microslop for every dime Billy Gates has.

Ringworld. Now that's something I'd pay good money to see on the big screen.
