Watch the Poltergeist trilogy all in one sitting, with the lights off and all the doors locked.

I'm always happy when I see people praise this movie - very underrated and there are a lot of scenes that scare the shit of me.

Oh, I was going to reccomend this one as well. Also, The Thing by John Carpenter.......have fun with the "blood testing" scene.

(Trying to avoid the most obvious answers, like Alien, Halloween, Hellraiser, Re-Animator, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Omen, The Fly, The Thing, The Exorcist, etc.)

May, Session 9, 28 Days Later, Below, Event Horizon, Dog Soldiers, Frailty, Ravenous, The Hills Have Eyes, Near Dark, Mute Witness, and Saw are flicks I recommend a lot.

And go see High Tension next week.

I agree with Event Horizon and Haute tension (High Tension) is also very good, best horror film released in the US this year.

There is also a good horror film called Thesis, which will crawl under your skin.

For a start, most 'Gore' movies are not scary (Evil Dead could have been great, but turned silly, with laughable cartoon gore).

If you want genuine scary, 2 words........... 'THE CHANGLING'.

The Changeling
The Entity

Both are great if you like the ghost/suspense thing.
