'M:I-3' on Cruise control

Paramount Pictures said Tuesday that it will begin principal photography on "Mission: Impossible 3," starring Tom Cruise, on July 18 in Italy. The announcement was made by Paramount Pictures chairman and CEO Brad Grey. In recent weeks, several press reports speculated that the film might not be given a green light even though casting was under way because of concerns over its budget as well as intense media coverage of Cruise's public romance with Katie Holmes, which some reports contended was damaging his standing as an A-list star.

So they kill Watchmen and push MI:3, hmmm....

Well, in all fairness MI3 is certainly the more surefire blockbuster hit.

'Watchmen' winds up in turnaround
Par's comic adaptation stalls out after Grey appointment

Paramount has stopped watching over "The Watchmen." After two months of speculation, the studio pulled the plug on the action-adventure and put it into turnaround over the weekend. Producers Larry Gordon and Lloyd Levin were taking the project, with British director Paul Greengrass ("The Bourne Supremacy") attached, out to other studios....

crap.

AP released this story, this is just part of it.

After more than a week of haggling over costs, Tom Cruise and Paramount Pictures have reached a deal that will allow "Mission: Impossible 3" to move ahead with filming in Italy next month.

The film will be directed by J.J. Abrams, who joined the project last August, and will be produced by Cruise and his partner, Paula Wagner.

The deal fell into place after Cruise agreed to adjust his lucrative profit participation deal and shave a budget that had swelled to as much as $185 million, the Los Angeles Times reported.

The movie will feature Cruise and co-stars Ving Rhames, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Michelle Monaghan and Philip Seymour Hoffman. It is set for release on May 5, 2006.

LOL. The fact that they call The Watchmen an "action adventure" is reason enough to pull it. Alan Moore's work doesn't translate very well to film (or, at least, there no director seems to be able to translate it with any degree of competency). I'd rather no film adaptation at all instead of yet another bastardation like The League or From Hell.

My problem with the MI movies is that they have little to do with the TV Series. If they had, it would be about a team of agents not just Tom Cruise's character. Maybe JJ will get some of that back.

Myster X 06-09-05 02:21 PM

maybe MI1 will get a remake someday. Boy, was it lame.

RocShemp 06-09-05 03:56 PM

Actually, MI1 was pretty solid except for the whole helicopter finale. It was a nice piece of FX work that still holds up well today but it was far too over-the-top just the same.

I hope J.J. Abrams makes it an ensemble film instead of a Tom Cruise movie. Use his name to advertise the film but don't make him the only character in the movie. That's exactly why MI2 sucked.

Yeah, MI2 because just another 007 ripoff. My favorite part of MI1 was the team stuff with Ving Rhames, Emmanuel Beart, Jean Reno, etc..

I agree completely on both counts. I was happy they kept Ving Rhames in MI2 but was upset that he was basically just a side kick. Asside from the pilot, did Ethan Hunt even try to assemble an IMF Team at any point during MI2?

Given that Abrams has managed to make Alias and ensemble show despite the fact that Jennifer Garner is the still undoubtedly the star, I'm hoping he can do the same for MI3.

Wait? So Tom Cruise signed on to the Evil Dead remake? ;)

UKingdom 06-09-05 05:50 PM

too bad they lost carrie ann moss and scarlett johannsen; those would have been 2 awesome female leads; the girl in now isn't as impressive

LivingINClip 06-09-05 07:21 PM

Oh come on. Within the few days we will see a ton of WoW trailers and the movie will rank a ton in. Fact is, Tom Cruise hype is at it's highest, even if it is for all the wrong reasons.

whotony 06-09-05 08:18 PM

maybe a admin could fix the title of this to actually say mission impossible 3 or M.I. 3.

right now it looks like M 1 to 3

Geofferson 07-12-05 01:38 PM

M:I-3 filming just started. Here's a picture of Cruise in a speed boat on Rome's Tiber River (looks like he's sporting a mullett for this 3rd installment) :p:

Ha. Yea. You can see her arm.

But that pic is definately Photoshop-able. Any takers?

I know, but it was too good to pass up. :)

riley_dude 07-12-05 06:12 PM

Good. Maybe they will make the movie the way it should be as an ensemble piece, not a Tom Cruise vehicle.
The show was about a group of agents foiling crimes, not Ethan Hunt doing it alone.

The only reason I would have seen it was because of Keri Russell.

JesseCuster 07-13-05 11:41 AM

The photoshops are just killin' me. LOLOLOL
