Good for them. I'm talking about this weekend. Those 2 movies were the only ones making money at that time last year. Sith looks to be on top even with 2 other very popular new openers taking in a lot of $$$, one being a kids animated movie. That impresses me.

At the 10 Day mark Spiderman was at $223M, Spiderman 2 was at $225M, Shrek 2 was at $184M, and at that same point now ROTS is at $236M.

That's pretty good in my mind.

my point is that Memorial Day Weekend is traditionally a huge movie for box office receipts so it's no surprise that these 3 movies are putting up these types of #s.

Last year, Shrek 2 put up $95.5 million while the Day After Tomorrow put up $85.8 million. Those 2 movies alone put up $181.3 million.

This year, Boxofficemojo estimates that ROTS will put up $70.8 million, The Longest Yard $61 million, and Madagascar $60 million. 3 movie total of $191.8 million. That's only $10 million more than last year's top 2 movies. Factor in the $15.3 million from Troy and last year's top 3 movies made more than this year's top 3 movies. Add in the 2% inflation or so and last year's receipts top this years by about $10 million for the top 3 movies.

Hek even Bruce Almighty put up $86 million during Memorial Day Weekend

very good but Shrek 2 had the most legs cuz it appealed to all ages. Families could take their kids to that. They couldn't necessarily do so with either Spiderman movie and almost certainly not with ROTS.

Also remember that Shrek 2 opened up terribly since Dreamworks moved the date to a Wednesday. It only did $11.8 million that day. Hek, ROTS with its heavy fanboy influence did something like $18 million alone on midnight showings.

My point is ROTS still being #1 even with 2 other big new releases taking business from it, both of whom have mass appeal. I'm not arguing the fact that Memorial Day weekend earns alot of $$$ for movies. I'm talking more about competition for ROTS rather than actual numbers.

Saw ROTS for the 2nd time today. My theater for it was just as packed when I saw it the week before.
Maybe this means that movies with unhappy endings aren't so bad for box office afterall!

Why do people always judge a movie based on it's box office returns? "Nobody cares for the other crap." So a movie is deemed "crap" just because it didn't pull in 60 million in it's 2nd-4th week in theaters? And just because Kingdom of Heaven isn't doing well, you feel obligated to ask if it's "that bad?" Simply put, box office returns say very little about the quality of a film. Lots of good films have dismal theatrical runs.

...you know what, nevermind. No sense in pointing out the obvious.

I saw Crash today and absolutely loved it. The theater had about 50 people in it, which surprised me, considering what what the top 3 were doing business wise.
