Question about hyper-speed

Hey, I know we need another SW thread.

Was wondering, while watching Ep. 3, I noticed Obi-Wan's ship towards the end had to use that hyper-type ring floating in space to use hyper-speed. Did all ships have to use such a device to travel at that speed or was it that kind of ship? Everyone knows in the OT that the ships have it built in, but I thought maybe that hadn't developed it that far yet. If the ships in the new trilogy had it, I guess I missed it or didn't pay attention.

I get the feeling like its something to let a small ship travel further than it normally would be able to.

Jedi Fighters were kinda small to have that technology built in. I remember it being a very special feature of X-wing fighters that they had Hyperdrive capability built in, but this was almost 20 years worth of minaturization between the two.

The Jedi Advanced Fighter was designed to be assigned to larger capital ships and thus hyperspace capability was not needed except for special missions.

the republic was like the empire, or vice versa. their fighters didn't have hypre drive
none of the normal tie fighters, bombers or interceptors had it either. only the tie advanced that vader had in ANH
apparently the naboo fighters had hyper driver though, as a couple of them escorted amidala's space yatch thing in AOTC
