movies that are too long (please list specific scene's if possible)

we can all say "x" movie is too long and could easily lose 30 minutes from the movie to be quicker paced, well, what scene's explicitly could/should have been cut to make it move faster

I can't name any off the top of my head, but maybe some examples could help.

Lord of the Rings. I know people will freak at that comment but I thought it dragged in a lot of places (especially the first) and some stuff could have been left out and not altered the story. For each one of them, I was yawning by the 2/3 point. After the first one I came home and took a nice long nap since it tired me out so much. That nap is still brought up as one of my favorite things related to the movie.

I gotta go with A.I. I looked forward to that movie so much, but the ending just kept going and going and going. It was painful to watch. I just wanted it to end. I've seen a lot of movies, but nothing has stuck in my head as a movie ending that just lasted too long as much as that one.

The Bridges of Madison County
Clint took way too much time in slowing this film to a snail's pace.

Meet Joe Black
Another where pacing just went on and on and on, like the scene where Pitt and Forlani are exchanging glances. That was pretty indicative of the whole movie.

Apocalypse Now Redux

The original was great, but all the added scenes did was drag it out to a ridiculously painful length.

The Empire Strikes Back was too long. They didn't need all that Yoda crap. Cut him out, and the movie is perfect.

Bad Boys 2. A movie with some fun action sequences, bloated to an unbearable 2 hours and 30 minutes. Cut the fat and stupid schtick, would've made a good ol 100 minute action romp.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service runs almost 2 and a half hours, any scene with Telly Savalas could've been cut down more.

Once Upon a Time in America.

Just trimming the scenes where people just stare off into space would have trimmed an hour.

This is what I thought of immediately. Specifically in Return of the King. The multiple endings not so much, but the ring and the lava scene just seemed forever in my opinion.

Heaven's Gate

There's a ton of stuff that could be cut without negatively affecting the movie. For example, there's a sequence where the entire cast roller-skates for some reason.

Telly Savalas was the best Blofeld and he rocked!

I completely agree with whoever said Bad Boys II, that could have been a fun flick, but it just goes on...and on...and on!

Also, I'd say Pearl Harbor, flick shoulda ended after the attack. Saving Private Ryan and Jackie Brown. I love QT, but I just don't think that movie needed 2.5 hours.

TPM - Remove all the Gungan Stuff, and this would have been a VERY engaging and entertaining movie. The Gungans really served no purpose whatsoever in the film or anywhere in the SW universe.

OTOH the EEs of LOTR are great. Sometimes movies that are too long are actually too short.

Agreed. It was so long that despite being a good idea and having Brad Pitt in it, it got pretty boring at times.

No, no purpose other than to unite with the Naboo and defeat the Trade Federation blockade...no...nothing at all

After I saw that pile of dung, I said "Well it had a great opening...and that's it...all downhill!"

Episode I: The Pod Race.

I know alot of people think this is one of the few good parts of the movie, but to me it's just out of place, way too long, and doesn't serve to advance the plot very much. Yes, it establishes that Anakin is a great pilot, but do we really need a 20 minute sequence to establish this in the middle of the film? Then Lucas goes and actually makes the sequence LONGER for the DVD!

The Gungan city sequence is also a bit out of place, but it doesn't take up much time. at least they hadn't gotten to the Queen yet at this point.

Actually I think it's 11 minutes. I think you're missing something: it's a fun scene. It not only establishes Anakin's ability, but advances the story by giving the Queen and Jinn the money and parts to get off the planet.

The entire first half of Pearl Harbor could have easily been cut and would have made it a watchable film. and "only" 2 hours.

When I saw High Fidelity in the theater I thought it could have been tightened up by 10-15 minutes, but now I can't imagine what I would want cut out.
