Weekend Box Office - April 22nd - April 24th, 2005

1 The Interpreter 7.481 NEW 2758 2,712 7.48
2 Amityville Horror 4.510 -49% 3323 1,357 34.13
3 A Lot Like Love 2.961 NEW 2502 1,183 2.96
4 Sahara 2.435 -34% 3200 761 42.35
5 Kung Fu Hustle 2.305 - 2500 922 3.04
6 Fever Pitch 1.786 -37% 2875 621 27.79
7 Sin City 1.115 -51% 2343 476 65.02
8 Guess Who 1.048 -29% 2484 422 59.92
9 Robots 0.767 -4% 2072 370 117.64
10 King's Ransom 0.665 NEW 1508 441 0.67

Glad to see King's Ransom at the bottom, Sad to see the steady decline for Sin City. Wish Kung Fu Hustle was higher up (one case where I DO think the R-rating hurt it).

That is all.

Perkinsun Dzees 04-23-05 02:21 PM

Dammit! Does this mean we won't get to see Ashton Kutcher in an underwear ad? Dammit!

QuiGonJosh 04-23-05 04:16 PM

Kung Fu Hustle did pretty good! Cool!

fumanstan 04-23-05 05:49 PM

Pretty slow weekend. I actually thought Kung Fu Hustle would do a little better, but i suppose that's about right.

Mr. Cinema 04-23-05 06:00 PM

Looks like "Amityville Horror" will follow a similar pattern to last year's "Dawn of the Dead". But it cost less, so it'll turn a nice profit for MGM's last theatrical release.

Jackskeleton 04-23-05 06:06 PM

Just about anything turns a profit now a days. have it be in theater or dvd. It's still a success for MGM.

Mr. Cinema 04-23-05 06:11 PM

Obviously everything is profitable with the popularity of dvd. But I was referring to box office gross. It's a bonus when you can make some major $$$ during the theatrical run.

Two Kutcher movies in the top 10. Looks like we've all been Punk'd.

Geofferson 04-25-05 09:19 AM

Nice take for The Interpreter. I figured it'd open right around $20M.

Fincher Fan 04-25-05 09:33 AM

Thanks for the info and hate to complain, but could you please use a table or something?

RichC2 04-25-05 10:19 AM

Hi!

QuikSilver 04-25-05 07:22 PM

Glad to see The Interpreter doing well. The question is will it be number one again next weekend.

invisiblegt 04-25-05 07:56 PM

Doubtful.

With XXX: State of the Union (if it opens at half of the original - $44 million - it will make about $22 million, or about what The Interpreter opened at this week), and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (with a cult following and decades of waiting), I don't think The Interpreter will stay in the number one spot.

Which is a shame, because it's a fairly good movie...

gnradd21 04-25-05 07:56 PM

Interpreter will probably get bounced to #3 next weekend. I expect the cult of rabid "Hitchhiker's Guide..." fans (including me) to give it a pretty big opening weekend, but then it'll most likely drop off sharply in the weeks after. I'm guessing the lunkhead sequel to XXX will probably be in the top spot. I can't decide who's acting cred is going down the crapper faster, Ice Cube or Ashton Kutcher.

resinrats 04-25-05 11:06 PM

I know I'll be going to XXX2 this weekend.

I'll pray for you tonight.

Jaymole 04-26-05 07:42 AM

It's nice to see a halfway intelligent, adult film at #1 for a change.

The Bus 04-26-05 08:17 AM

Man... Talk about a bomb. Anyone know how much the budget for State Property 2 was? This sounded like a direct-to-video movie that somehow made it to theatres.

QuiGonJosh 04-26-05 08:26 AM

I figure Hitchhiker is gonna make about $35-$40mil and xXx 2 to do about $23mil.

Interesting...

QuiGonJosh 04-26-05 11:24 AM

Well, Hitchhiker is a classic book, millions have read it, I'm assuming, I'm not one of them, although I've been meaning to for about 10 years. ;)

I think based on the popularity of the book and it's fans it can do $35mil easy.
