I searched for a thread on this movie, and couldn't find one.

Anyways, Coming Soon.net posted some casting news, as well as what the film is about:

Cherry Road Films and Darko Entertainment announced today that Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will star opposite Seann William Scott ("American Pie" films, The Dukes of Hazzard) and Sarah Michelle Gellar (The Grudge) in the science-fiction thriller Southland Tales for writer-director Richard Kelly (Donnie Darko). Sean McKittrick will produce under the Darko Entertainment banner he co-founded with Kelly. Cherry Road principals Bo Hyde and Kendall Morgan will produce. Executive producers are Matthew Rhodes and Judd Payne of Persistent Entertainment, Bill Johnson and Jim Seibel of Inferno Distribution, and Oliver Hengst of Academy Film Gmbh.

Principal photography is slated to begin on August 1 in Los Angeles. Cherry Road Films has officially greenlit the picture with co-financing from Universal Pictures International, Inferno Distribution and Wild Bunch, with Universal distributing in most foreign territories through the UIP banner, and Wild Bunch distributing in France, Benelux, Spain and Switzerland. Richard Klubeck of UTA is representing on the domestic front.

Southland Tales is an ensemble piece set in the futuristic landscape of Los Angeles on July 4, 2008, as it stands on the brink of social, economic and environmental disaster. Johnson will star as Boxer Santaros, an action star stricken with amnesia whose life intertwines with Krysta Now (Gellar), an adult film star developing her own reality television project, and David Clark (Scott), a Hermosa Beach police officer who holds the key to a vast conspiracy.

"Dwayne, Seann and Sarah each have an adventurous spirit and I am honored that they have put their faith in me," said Kelly. "The film is going to be a strange hybrid of the sensibilities of Andy Warhol and Philip K. Dick."

Also joining the project are most of the key crew from Donnie Darko, including director of photography Steven Poster ASC, production designer Alexander Hammond, costume designer April Ferry and editor Sam Bauer. Critically acclaimed artist and producer Moby will compose the music for the film.

In addition to the feature film, an expanded version of Southland Tales will be presented as a nine-part interactive experience with the prequel saga to be published as six separate 100 page graphic novels, each written by Kelly. The graphic novels will be released over a six month period early next year leading up to the film's release with the feature film comprised of the story's final three chapters. In addition, the film's official website will be one of the largest and most elaborate ever designed for a feature film. "The graphic novels will work in tandem with the website, creating a more epic multimedia experience for those interested in taking the plunge," added Kelly.

Oh my... sounds very interesting.

So, another bad movie from Kelly made good in the eyes of net dorks because there was a web site that contained the back story?

I have high hopes for the film. I hope Kelly doesn't drown in his material.

Loved Donnie D like most, really looking foward to Domino, but nothing could get me to see or support a movie w/ "The Rock" in it. I know for some bizarre reason he is really popular in this forum, but I just can't stand the no talent hack & even just as bad is the horribly unfunny American Pie guy.

I loved Donnie Darko at first but then later viewings opened my eyes to non-sense that it is. I like The Rock but we'll see about this.

or perhaps another mainstream movie by a respected director that net dorks can decide is a piece of crap before the script even sees a first draft.

Donnie Darko director Richard Kelly's next one is, a musical/comedy set in 2008 where a three-day heatwave in Los Angeles culminates in a huge Fourth of July party... Starring The Rock, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Seann William Scott & Kevin Smith???

I just stumbled on this and thought I'd post it... Any thoughts?

I despised his first movie with deep, furious venom; seeing as this movie is already being set up with comic books and shit that you have to read before seeing the movie, I don't have high hopes for this either. But based on that alone, the net dorks are going to swallow this up like a hot load.

Doesn't sound very interesting.

That premise doesn't sound nearly as interesting as the earlier project he was working on (that he apparently abandoned).

I don't think I pre-judged anything, my exact words were "I don't have high hopes for.." Certainly one is allowed to set their expectations on a movie based on what is known about it before actually seeing it. Had I stated "This movie sucks!" or "This movie will suck!" I'd agree with you.

As for the second part, I simply stated that a certain demograph will absorb much more entertainment from the movie based on the fact that there are comic books and a website that tie-in to it. If you find that insulting that's your perogative but I'm only stating the obvious there.

Just thought i would dig this up becuase of the fact that i was listening to the audio commentary on the Donnie Darko DC and all his (Richard Kelly)talk about the script just got me so interested. I anticipate this release like my next ejaculation.

I am a little baffled by the casting choices though.

Wow, that's quite the analogy.

I, uh, fall in between how Heartagram and PixyJunket feel. Unless the previews are awesome, I'll probably just wait to rent it. The premise doesn't sound that great, but that hasn't stopped some movies from being enjoyable.

Love Donnie D. as well, and am very excited about this project here.

Kind of a mixed response so far, more negative than not.

Ebert gave Darko a 2.5 out of 4 initially, upgraded to a 3 out of 4 when the DC came out (not because it was better, but rather he had just suffered through Princess Diaries 2).

The film, which touches on everything from an apocalyptic nuclear bombing in Malibu in 2008 to the nation's obsession with celebrity, received a cold reaction at a press screening. (Daily Variety later called it "a pretentious, overreaching, fatally unfocused fantasy.") At a news conference following the screening, a reporter prefaced a question to Kelly by remarking that he had "never seen so many walkouts" at a press screening at Cannes.

Sarah Michelle Gellar as a pornstar though, I'm soooo there!!!!!!

That's hilarious. At least it only took 1 more movie for everyone to open their eyes to the terrible storywriter/director known as Richard Kelly.

If you're not pissed off already, guess who is joining the party? . . .

. . . Justin Timberlake. I heard a quote on the radio from Kelly talking about how he was targeting actors who had been pigeon-holed in the past. Kelly said he thinks Timberlake will rise to the occasion and surprise a lot of people with his performance.
