This looks like a fun time. Can't wait. And I'm always happy to see SMG getting more work (even though this was shot a long time ago).

I dont know what to say. It looks absolutely awful, yet it could work and be a cult classic

I'm not so sure of this. I enjoyed Donnie Darko a lot but I can't say I have a good feeling about this one. I'm really put off by the fact that a wrestler is the star.

The Rock is actually a really good actor. All of the movies he has been in (with the exception of The Mummy Returns) are actually watchable due to his presence. For example, the movie Be Cool was a flaming piece of shit. However, The Rock's performance (and most will agree with me on this), was the best part about the whole thing.

When you watch his roles, you can tell that he's having fun, showing that he has a lot of charisma, and is giving it his all. That can't be said about most working in the industry.

The Rock (quickly becoming just Dwayne Johnson) is a good actor, and is the least of things I would worry about with this film.

At worst it'll be an interesting colossal failure, but one that atleast tried for greatness. Atleast that's how the trailer makes it look.

To spoil the plot a little (no big specifics, but it covers some of the mystery in the trailer)

Spoiler:

El Paso and Abilene, Texas have fallen victim to twin nuclear attacks on July 4th, 2005 – a catastrophe of unimaginable proportions which sent America into war. The Patriot Act has been upgraded to a new agency known as USIdent, which keeps constant tabs on citizens – even to the extent of censoring the internet and using fingerprints in order to access computers and bank accounts. In order to be able to respond to a newfound fuel scarcity, the German company Treer designs a generator of inexhaustible energy which is propelled by ocean currents. Unbeknownst to them, the generators alter the currents and cause the Earth to to spiral out of control through space, ripping holes in the fabric of space and time.

In Los Angeles, a city on the brink of chaos, we follow the criss-crossed destinies of Boxer Santaros (Dwayne Johnson), an action film actor stricken with amnesia; Krysta Now (Sarah Michelle Gellar), ex-porn star in the midst of reconverting; and twin brothers Roland and Ronald Taverner (both played by Seann William Scott), whose destinies – on one evening – become intertwined with that of all mankind.

That was a strange trailer. It went from, "looks indie cool" to "looks craptacular". Not sure what to think. Very strange tones. Who knows, it could end up being this year's Brazil.

The trailer does earn kudos for using an Elbow song.

Yeah I don't know how I feel about this one, I was looking forward to it, this trailer didn't make me really want to see it though.

Seems like a film that will live or die on the editing room table, more so than most.

I got a 'Tank Girl' Vibe while watching this. Is Janeane Garofalo in this? Is that her shouting in the trailer?

Still I want to see it - looks cool.

And I HATED Donnie Darko.

I'd read about the poor reviews after Cannes, and was disappointed because I was really looking forward to this...is it possible a few loud critics made it appear everyone else hated it too?

^I believe it's Cherri O'terri from Saturday Night Live who is doing the shouting and shooting in the trailer.

But anyway I find this trailer fascinating both visually and because its full of actors who for the most part you would normally associate with bad movies.
I can say that this looks like something I've never seen before and looks like it could have both energy and imagination which I havn't seen too much of in the movies recently.

I did enjoy Donnie Darko quite a bit, so I'll def. check this out, but not setting my expectations too high.

Donnie Darko is the one film I've seen where I think the studio made it better by hacking it up. The theatrical version is a fantastic Lynchian film that's open to a million interpretations, whereas Kelly's director's cut forces the viewer into a specific reading which simply isn't as interesting. Hopefully the recutting of Southland Tales will similarly improve it.

Kelly had final cut with the theatrical cut. Newmarket didn't make him do anything.

Yeah , I look at the director's cut more as a remixed version of the theatircal version. Both have their stengths and weaknesses.

Hmm. that clip doesn't show any evidence of the booing that I heard so much about.
The strange thing about the Cannes showing is if it was so disastrous why was it nominated for the Palme D'or

With that cast, it's probably going to get a solid 1500 screen release, no? I doubt it's going to be stuck on 300 art-house screens.
