Looks like it'll be a good opening for "Amityville Horror", but I'm sure it'll follow the trend of the 50% dropoff next weekend.

Jackskeleton 04-16-05 06:14 PM

while it's not the top steller opening, I would figure they were shooting for more of a 30 range for opening. Though at the price and the sure amount they are expecting out of a DVD sale, it will do just fine.

The way Kung Fu Hustle has been doing in only 7 theaters, can't wait to see what happens when another 2000 are added next Friday!

Shannon Nutt 04-16-05 08:50 PM

No shock that Amityville is doing well...considering there's absolutely NOTHING above-average playing right now. The closest thing to a "good" movie out there is SIN CITY - and even that isn't quite good enough for me to recommend.

Hopefully, THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY will liven up the box office doldrums in a few weeks.

Gut instinct is telling me Fever Pitch will wind up with slightly less than displayed, and Sin City with slightly more.

Fantastic numbers for Kung Fu Hustle.

I have to completely disagree. I can totally see Sin City not being someone's type of movie, especially for a girl, but how could you not call it a good movie? It's a tremendous piece of filmmaking that bucks all the trends of the paint by the numbers trappings that mainstream film has become & actually attempts & succeeds at being an original film that is 100 percent faithful to its source material.

I can't sit though Forrest Gump or Spider-man, but I'm not going to say they aren't "good" movies, they just aren't my types of film.

No mention of Sahara's 27% drop? Granted, it didn't open huge, but a movie has to be doing something right to keep from dropping like stone after a week these days.

Mr. Cinema 04-17-05 01:31 PM

The modest drop for "Sahara" is a real shocker to me. Too bad the budget is $130 mil or they might have had a real successful US run.

Paramount spent $130 on a Matthew McConaughey action vehicle? No wonder they haven't had a blockbuster in years with that kind of decision making. If you are going to spend that kind of money, at least get a bankable star.

They didn't.

SAHARA's money came from various sources. It isn't all Paramount.

That caught my eye too, but than noticed nearly every other film (minus a few) had an equally small drop. Though from what I've heard Sahara does seem to be a crowd-pleasing type of film. Too bad the reported budget is so ridiculously high...

No kidding. Paramount doesn't spend 130 million dollars on anything, though with new management I think that won't be the case anymore. This film though, not sure who thought that sorta budget on this was a good idea. Cause that second week drop would be a good sign for a modestly budgeted film. But with Sahara's budget, I'm not sure there was ever a time when it was going to make that type of money. Perhaps international sales will be robust though, as I'm sure there must have been some logic behind the financiers to get them to spend that much.

You called it "original," yet faithful to its source material. I would guess he was confused about how something could be based on something else but also original. But I think what you meant was pretty clear.

Good to see Beauty Shop is hangin' in there.

The Bus 04-18-05 07:52 AM

Anyone know what The Ring Two's budget was? $75MM seems like a good take for a movie that was so notoriously hated by the critics. My guess is the budget should be about $60MM or so --- making it a bit more profitable than a lot of people hoped.

Mr. Cinema 04-18-05 07:55 AM

"The Amityville Horror's" budget was $19 mil. Looks like it'll bring a nice profit for MGM and more than likely spawn a sequel or two. Cheaply made horror flicks is the trend nowadays.
