Can we get Johnny Depp an Oscar, please?

I'm starting to think Mr. Depp is becoming due for some recognition. thoughts?

NatrlBornThrllr 04-15-05 03:26 PM

I hear the new Hitchcock picture may take home Best Director, finally.

i'm wondering if depp is too bad boy to get an award. but really, he seems to have done it all.

conscience 04-15-05 03:45 PM

Deserved a nod (and win, IMO) for Edward Scissorhands.

BassDude 04-15-05 05:00 PM

I think it is obvious Depp is one of, if not the most diverse & talented actor alive. But why do people care if he has an Oscar? Who gives 2 shits. The Oscars are such self-congratulatory, PC, marketing B.S., that I have no clue why people feel the need for an actor they like to have an Oscar in order to validate that person's abilities. If the Oscar's meant anything, he would have one for Fear & Loathing.

Jackskeleton 04-15-05 06:33 PM

He will, he's just been unlucky enough to get nominated in the years that there is some better actor nominated.

Yeah, he did a great job in that role. One of my all-time favorites.

Who ... Sean Penn and Jamie Fox?

I'll take Johnny Depp over both.

Mr. Cinema 04-15-05 09:22 PM

We need to get Ian McKellen and Martin Scorsese one first. These next statements make me sick. Ron Howard has a Best Director Oscar and Martin Scorsese doesn't. Roberto Benigni has a Best Actor Oscar and Ian McKellen doesn't.

Cary Grant never won an Oscar.
Toshiro Mifune never won an Oscar.
Akira Kurosawa never won an Oscar.
Alfred Hitchcock never won an Oscar.
Stanley Kubrick never won an Oscar.

Personally, I'd rather be on the list of people that didn't win an Oscar.

Cameron 04-15-05 10:51 PM

neither does...

alfred hitchcock or cary grant

Guess what... you are!

movielib 04-16-05 10:38 AM

As much as I like Depp I'd rather first give Oscars to Peter O'Toole and Albert Finney.

Rival11 04-16-05 10:40 AM

I'm still wondering how Sean Penn won for Mystic River or how Whoopie won for Ghost or how Kim basinger won...for whatever she won it for or how Cuba Gooding won for Jerry Mguire or how Daniel Day Lewis didn't win for Gangs of New York..............

Yeah, F*** the oscars

I call bullshit. The only reason he doesn't win is because the actors who are nominated campaign for the award.

Johnny has stated a few times he is honored to be nominated, but doesn't give two shits about winning, so he doesn't bother to campaign. He'll just keep showing up at the awards show dressed in his best smoking jacket, look sexy for a few hours, and then he leaves to have a smoke and a drink with whoever he's shacked up with at the moment.

To borrow a line from Zaphod, he's so hip he has trouble seeing over his own pelvis. He's so cool, you can keep a side of beef in him for a week.

Are you Martin Scorsese?

From an article that came out a couple of weeks before this year's Oscars:

Johnny Depp isn't looking forward to the Oscars next month because he hated attending the ceremony with his girlfriend Vanessa Paradis.

The actor, who received a Best Actor nomination for his role as JM Barrie in Finding Neverland on Monday, admits he wasn't looking forward to hearing his name mentioned - because he didn't want to return to the Oscars after his experience last year.

He recalls: "All Vanessa and I could think of was, 'When and where can we go smoke?' and 'Where can we get a drink?' and 'When is it over?' and 'Please don't let me win.'

"It was such a shock, to get the news that I'd been nominated. My first reaction was 'Why?' On one level I was flattered, but it's not what I'm working for.

"When I didn't win the thing - oh, I was ecstatic. Absolutely ecstatic. I applauded the lucky winner and said, 'Thank God'."
Anyway, the Academy seems to have finally decided that Depp is one of their favorite actors, so they'll probably nominate him for everything from now on, and he'll win soon enough. If he can get nominated for his completely unremarkable work in Finding Neverland over far more deserving contenders (Paul Giamatti in particular), then it shouldn't be a problem.

I take it you didn't see Ray

mllefoo 04-17-05 01:24 PM

Meh. Ray interests me about as much as the toenail clippings in my bathroom.

Actually, the only nominated for best picture movie last year I was even remotely interested in seeing was Finding Neverland. It was every bit as good as I thought it would be.

I'd consider the Best Foreign Language Film for Dersu Uzala winning an Oscar.

I did. He gave an average performance in an average movie.

DVDho78DTS 04-17-05 04:13 PM

..and the Oscar goes to:

Johnny Depp: The Diving Bell and the Butterfly.

Johnny Depp portrays Elle France editor Jean-Dominique Bauby, who, in 1995 at the age of 43, suffered a stroke that paralyzed his entire body, save his left eye. Using that eye to blink out his memoir, Bauby eloquently described the aspects of his interior world, from the psychological torment of being trapped inside his body to his imagined stories from lands he'd only visited in his mind.

DealMan 04-17-05 05:52 PM

Personally I think Don Cheadle shouldn've won best actor last year, but I do think Depp deserved one for some of his other performances.

He's still relatively young and he has plenty of time. He knows how to choose good roles so the Miss Cleo in me forsees a future win.

I suppose. But I don't recall him actually getting a trophy. The backers in Moscow got them.
