well ah-geesh, if we're talking about songs/music written specifically for the film - I'd have a very long list.

The opening credits on Se7en. Closer to God remix by Nine Inch Nails. Sets the mood for the film perfectly and the visuals are a treat as well.

sacrilege. we all know that Mad World is the best song in Donnie Darko. Head over Heels was good, but Mad World ....

i'll have to say Stay by Lisa Loeb in Reality Bites for the simple reason that she went from unsigned and unknown to #1 on the charts because of this movie.

There are so many, but in recent memory, it would have to be Dawn of the Dead (2004), Richard Cheese's version of "Down With The Sickness" in the mall

...and also "He Jude" at the beginning.

Also: "Layla" in Goodfellas... I love that part. The bit with DeNiro and "Sunshine For Your Love" is great too.

That last song in Magnolia - I wouldn't buy the CD or anything, but it was pretty powerful.

You're the Best - Karate Kid
I love that song. It's no "Glory of Love", but what is.

Anyway, the correct answer to this question is clearly "Meet Me Half Way" by Kenny Loggins from the tour de force Over the Top.

I know this doesn't really count since it is a tv show and not a movie, but i love the episode in season 3 of Alias where they use Change by the Deftones, that was a kickass scene.

Also wanted to add "Bittersweet Symphony" at the end of Cruel Intentions is pretty awesome.

My first thought as well. Ironically, it's a Tears for Fears song as well, covered by Gary Jules.

I think a case could be made for Killing Moon from Donnie Darko as well. Music was just used brilliantly in that film. Wish it had a real soundtrack...although I think I have all the songs I'd need to put one together myself.

No sacrilege intended. Obviously Mad World is incredible in context (and a fantastic cover in general). But I always thought of it as something that was done for the movie, as opposed to the original recordings used throughout to capture the feeling of a certain time. Guess I wasn't counting it for that reason.

"PEACHES" (aka "Walkin' on the Beaches Lookin' at the Peaches") by THE STRANGLERS, perfectly setting the scene and getting the ball rolling (or stone, as it were) for Jonathan Glazer's underrated "SEXY BEAST".
