XMEN 3 has a director!

20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment have hired British filmmaker Matthew Vaughn to direct X-MEN 3.

Hugh Jackman, Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart are already on board to reprise their roles. Fox is still in negotiations with Halle Berry though.

The film is aiming for a release date of May 26, 2006.

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - "Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels" producer Matthew Vaughn has blown away the competition.
Twentieth Century Fox has settled on Vaughn to helm "X-Men 3," after Bryan Singer, the director of the first two "X-Men" installments, decided to forego the latest sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The popular Marvel Comics franchise pits gifted mutants versus a host of villains, including the military, evil scientists, politicians and other mutants. In the last film, Singer left hints that the upcoming movie will focus on the Jean Grey/Phoenix storyline.

Cast members reprising their roles include Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen.

At one point, the studio had courted "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon to direct, but he couldn't meet the deadline, which schedules the film to hit theaters May 26, 2006, the beginning of Memorial Day weekend. Instead, Whedon recently signed on to helm the "Wonder Woman" project, which does not yet have a release date.

Production on "X-Men 3" will begin in mid-July, based on a script by Zak Penn and Simon Kinberg.

Vaughn, 34, made his feature directorial debut for the British gangster film "Layer Cake," which will be released in the U.S. in May.

I just hope they keep it consistent and good. My only wish is that Vaughn can retain the repsect and spirit of the characters like Singer and co. did.

 Right - no need for him to explore his vision of what the characters should be.

Maybe there should be a Matthew Vaughn's X3?

In either case, I'm glad we'll get to see Gambit, but there really is no reason to start tossing everyone in for the sake of tossing them in. Beast and angel sound like good plans.

No, only Joss Whedon gets that distinction. He's the next John Carpenter.
