The Jacket

I caught this yesterday.

Pretty good movie, especially for this slow time of the year.

Strong performance from Brody, and a compelling story. I liked the ending quite a lot as well, as it was one that really leaves it up to the viewer to decide what happens.

I'd give in 3/5 stars.

Dabaomb 03-06-05 02:52 PM

I saw a pre-screening of this last Monday.

I should've posted a thread on it but I didn't for whatever reason.

It's a lot like the Butterfly Effect.

You also forgot to mention the most important thing. KEIRA KNIGHTLY NUDE SCENES

I also enjoyed it and give it 2.5 stars out of 4

I just got back from this and really liked it. The whole drawer thing has always been a fear of mine for some reason, but now that I know what happens while you're in there, I'm all for it!

strap you up, right?

exm 03-10-05 12:16 PM

Saw it a couple of days ago and enjoyed it. Not as good as Butterfly Effect (Yes, I did like it) or Dannie Darko but still good. I'll second the 2.5/4 stars.

I saw this at Sundance a few months ago and listened to a Q and A with all the stars afterwards. I enjoyed the film and saying Keira's nude scene was the more important thing says a lot.
I thought it was better than Butterfly Effect but to each his own.
My question is, how did McKenzie Phillips get in there with Brody, Jennifer Jason Leigh etc?

I agree with you all the way but I think The Jacket deserves *** / ****.

Perkinsun Dzees 03-10-05 04:57 PM

Saw this last week and thought it was horrible. The characters are poorly conceived (particularly Keira's) and the director keeps cutting to extreme closeups of people's mouths and eyes for no apparent reason. I felt like I was watching an expensive student film. Bad lighting on Jennifer Jason Leigh made her look like she isn't aging well.

Trigger 03-10-05 08:50 PM

Jennifer isn't aging well. I agree that the extreme close-ups were too much. I think it was a good stylistic choice, but used too often in the film. Keira was overacting most of the time, and I didn't buy her character either... although, in some scenes she was pretty good.

I kinda liked the film overall, but I didn't think it was as good as Butterfly Effect... mainly for the problems stated above and a few other plot issues. One problem I had with it was his connection to the girl - mainly when he goes to visit her as a child (after sleeping with her older self) and tenderly touches her on the face. It was kinda creepy... that look he gave her was like "I can't wait till you grow up so we can do it".

I did like the time-travel aspect of it and thought it had pretty good pacing (although it could've been tightened up a little and included one more "trip" perhaps) and I dug the cinematography for the most part. It won't end up in my collection, but I'd watch it again.

I loved this movie's bleak tone, the snow and desolate scenes reminded me alot of The Pledge which I also loved. I thought the acting was top notch and the story really easy to follow once you get over the obvious time travel elements.

DonnachaOne 03-14-05 01:43 AM

I would have liked more of a point, and I'd have liked the writers to have improved Keira's character. Stuff just happens with barely any reason. She hates him, but in the next scene she's perfectly willing to play his Nancy Drew? Eh?

I would have also liked a little more ambiguity...
Spoiler:
there was the possibility that his visions are just hallucinations, but his knowledge of Leigh's patient and Kristofferson's test subjects rules that out.

Michael Corvin 09-12-05 10:36 AM

Just watched this over the weekend. I loved it. Great story, top notch acting, stunning visuals and cinematography. I loved the ambiguous ending. The alternates eliminate the ambiguity and would have ruined it if they were used.

The only thing that bugged me was the same thing Donnacha said. One scene she hates the guy and the next time she see's him she is all about helping out.

Definitely worth checking out. *** out of **** for me.

Since everyone else has weighed in, I have not seen the Butterfly Effect yet, also bought that over the weekend though.

Rival11 09-12-05 08:37 PM

It held my interest for a while but then just got boring, it seems like they didn't know how to end it and it got a little messy (story) towards the end as well.

I can see a lot of people liking this one though, Brody did a pretty damn good job of keeping you on the edge.

Yeah, I agree with this . . . it slowed down a little too much near the end. I gave it 3.5 out of 5. The acting was great (go Brody  )and the ideas werereally interesting, but I just didn't think that the story flowed well.

Also, chalk me up as another one who liked The Butterfly Effect better.

I did too. I just got The Jacket from Netflix about a week ago. I almost didn't even finish watching it. I think Brody did a good acting job, but it was missing something. Maybe I just didn't like the story...I don't know. Either way, I wouldn't bother watching it again.

maingon 09-15-05 11:23 AM

i thought it was okay. i thought the acting was very good. But its something i would never see again.

Rypro 525 09-16-05 09:30 PM

good stuff, does anyone think the sex scene looked like it was tacked on at the last second? Like suddenly the director, or possibly Kiera said "hey lets have a sex scene" as i don't think it was necessary or really fit.

ShallowHal 01-28-06 08:58 PM

This is the official thread, so I'll post here.

I was schocked to see Daniel Craig's name in the credits, I completely missed him! He looked alot different than Layer Cake, that's for sure. He was Jack's buddy inside the hospital, the guy who The The Organization for the Organized was looking for.

Now I think he could make a good Bond, he's pretty good in the roles I've seen.

Amel 01-28-06 11:19 PM

Craig's a pretty solid actor. He can do Bond easy.

As for the movie, I loved it. Maybe I need to see Butterfly Effect and Donnie Darko again, because I don't really see much similarity between these. I'll take The Jacket everytime over those two if for the performances of the cast alone.

Janus3 01-29-06 01:26 AM

yeah this movie was awesome. i loved it.

mndtrp 01-29-06 02:09 AM

I really liked it the first time I saw it as well. I need to rent this thing again.

I didn't like Donnie Darko, it seemed very forced to me. The whole rabbit thing was just.. odd. BE was great, though.

I'd love to see an extras packed 2 disc set for The Jacket come out, but I doubt that'll happen. This was my fourth time through, and I still loved it.

NatrlBornThrllr 01-30-06 04:06 AM

I think Donnie Darko is great, The Jacket is quite good, and Butterfly Effect is mediocre. While I don't see any particular comparison between the three films (aside from the genre and tone), they all have their own redeeming qualities. I'll revisit The Jacket sometime. Donnie Darko is already in my rotation...and I'll pass on repeat viewings of The Butterfly Effect.
