I agree. I caught a bit of Fletch on Starz a few weeks ago. It hasn’t aged as well as I would have hoped. As a kid I liked Fletch Lives more and although I haven’t seen it in a long time, I worry it has aged even worse.

I watched them again not that long ago. The original is still one of my favorite comedies and still holds up to me. I never cared much for Lives.

Need to see lives again as I can't really remember anything about it. Fletch does have some good one liners though.

The first one holds up well as a Chevy Chase 80s comedy, but not much else.

re: Confess, Fletch (2022, D: Mottola) S: Jon Hamm

EXCLUSIVE: Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden, Golden Globe winner Kyle MacLachlan and Daily Show correspondent Roy Wood Jr. are joining Jon Hamm in the Miramax movie Confess, Fletch, directed by Greg Mottola. Principal photography is set to start Monday.

The film is based on the original Gregory Mcdonald’s 1970s mystery novel series (which spawned two Chevy Chase comedies, Fletch in 1985 and Fletch Lives in 1989), and will stay true to Mcdonald’s second novel, Confess, Fletch. The story will follow Fletch, an investigative journalist who finds himself in the middle of a murder investigation, one in which he is pinned as the prime suspect. While on a quest to prove his innocence, Fletch is tasked with finding his fiancée’s stolen art collection, the only inheritance she’s acquired after her father goes missing and is presumed dead.

“The insouciant and sophisticated cocktail of Jon Hamm and Greg Mottola will be delivered to global audiences next year and promises to be very tasty,” said Miramax CEO Bill Block.

“We look forward to bringing Fletch’s iconic character back to the big screen with a modern-day twist. While the original film has been hailed a cult classic with a strong fan base, we are showcasing Fletch through a new comedic and sophisticated lens, highlighting the nuances of his character and the intricacies of his career as an investigative journalist,” said producer Connie Tavel.

Block, Tavel, and Hamm serve as producers on the film, while Mottola, Mark Kamine and David List will executive produce. Zev Borow and Mottola penned the screenplay. Block produced the $315 million-worldwide grossing Bad Moms franchise.

Wood will play the role of Detective Monroe. He suspects Fletch of being the murderer, and remains resistant to Fletch’s tips on the case. Harden and MacLachlan’s roles remain under wraps. Wood Jr. recently announced his stand-up tour Imperfect Messenger and he’s prepping for his Comedy Central special which will air later this year. He is repped by Mainstay Entertainment and WME.

re: Confess, Fletch (2022, D: Mottola) S: Jon Hamm

John Slattery, Ayden Mayeri, Lorenza Izzo and Annie Mumolo have joined the cast of Confess, Fletch, starring Jon Hamm and are now in production.

Mad Men alum Slattery is reteaming with Hamm for the reboot that closely follows the plot of the classic Gregory McDonald mystery novel series that inspired the 1980’s Chevy Chase films. Hamm stars as I.M.Fletcher, the hotshot investigative reporter played by Chase in the 1985 neo-noir comedy of the same name.

re: Confess, Fletch (2022, D: Mottola) S: Jon Hamm

Jon Hamm has finally made Fletch happen. After more than 30 years' worth of attempts to revive the popular mystery-comedy franchise, a new version of Fletch is finally set to arrive this year, starring Hamm as roguish journalist Irwin "Fletch" Fletcher (the role originally played onscreen by Chevy Chase).

EW has your exclusive first look photos at the new film Confess, Fletch below, featuring a glimpse of Hamm's onscreen reunion with his Mad Men costar John Slattery. The film's cast also includes Marcia Gay Harden, Kyle MacLachlan, Barb and Star's Annie Mumolo, The Daily Show's Roy Wood Jr., and Hacks' Lorenza Izzo.

Confess, Fletch sees the journalist become the prime suspect in a murder case while searching for his heiress girlfriend's stolen art collection. To prove his innocence, he must work his way through a long list of suspects and determine which one is the real culprit — a lineup that includes an eccentric art dealer, a missing playboy, a flamboyant countess, and even Fletch's girlfriend. Presumably, there will be some hijinks along the way.

Based on Gregory McDonald's series of mystery novels, Fletch originally hit screens with Chase in the title role in 1985, with the sequel Fletch Lives following in 1989. Over the subsequent decades, multiple potential reboots languished in development hell, with Ben Affleck, Ryan Reynolds, Zach Braff, and Jason Sudeikis all attached at one point or another.

Produced by Miramax and directed by Superbad's Greg Mottola, Confess, Fletch is currently in post-production and will be released later this year. You can see more first-look photos from the movie below.

Heck yes, I will go see that!

Had no idea Hamm would be doing scenes with John Slattery again (I missed the photo and story posted above). They have fabulous rapport together.

I'm in too. Jon Hamm seems to be a perfect fit. I never watched Fletch Lives, but I recently bought both movies on Blu-ray. I guess it's time to watch them.

^ Fletch Lives was fun as a kid. I re-watched it a few years ago and didn’t think it held up well.

The new trailer looks pretty good. And if that poster above is the actual poster, I may buy it.

Loved Mad Men, but Hamm doesn't feel right for the role - it doesn't feel funny enough with him.

Sudeikis would've fit the role much better I think.

I don't know. I think Hamm can be hysterically funny. He's amazing in Bridesmaids. And was great on 30 Rock.
I'm not sure how funny this will be, the trailer had a few chuckles. But I think he can be a very gifted comedic actor.

Re: Confess, Fletch (2022, D: Mottola) S: Jon Hamm

Almost half a century after novelist Gregory Mcdonald introduced the world to smart-aleck investigative journalist Irwin M. Fletcher, and almost four decades since Chevy Chase first portrayed the character on the big screen in the '80s classic Fletch, the character has now been revived by Jon Hamm in Confess, Fletch (out Sept. 16). And, as you can exclusively see in the trailer above, Fletch remains very much a wiseacre. "Fletch is a guy who's usually the smartest person in the room," says the film's director and co-writer Greg Mottola. "Certainly, he's a smartass."

Confess, Fletch finds the now former investigative reporter living in Europe and writing about less dangerous subjects like art and travel when he is hired to find out who stole several million dollars worth of art from a count's villa near Rome.

"Fletch comes to Boston to track down a bunch of stolen paintings, and the first day he's there, he discovers a dead body in the Airbnb he's staying in," says Mottola, whose previous directing credits include 2007's Superbad and 2009's Adventureland. "The police think he's the murderer, so he has to simultaneously find the stolen art and clear his name."

The film's cast also includes Roy Wood Jr., Marcia Gay Harden, Lorenza Izzo, Kyle MacLachlan, and Hamm's Mad Men costar John Slattery, who plays a Boston newspaper editor.

"This is essentially the same character who was Fletch's editor in the first Fletch movie, played by Richard Libertini," says Mottola. "They have a love-hate relationship."

It was the suggestion of Hamm, who is a producer on the film, that Mottola cast Slattery in the movie.

"I'd met John over the years, and I really, really enjoy him as an actor, so I loved the idea," says Mottola. "It was actually the first day of shooting all of their stuff, and it was a great first day because those guys have such a shorthand that they just immediately fell into a very funny, enjoyable rhythm."

One person who doesn't make an appearance in the film, even in a cameo role, is Chevy Chase.

"The reason we didn't ask Chevy Chase to be in it is not because we don't love the original movies, we do, but we thought this should be a new thing," says Mottola, whose film is based on McDonald's 1976 book Confess, Fletch but is set in the present day. "There's a lot of things Chevy did that aren't in the Fletch books: his style of comedy, the slapstick, and all the different names and disguises. We thought it wouldn't be right to steal them. We reference the original, we pay homage to it, but we tried to really balance it halfway between a detective mystery and a comedy, possibly more than the original."

Confess, Fletch costars Ayden Mayeri and Annie Mumolo. The film will be released in theaters, on digital, and on-demand Sept. 16.

I thought the trailer was great. Fletch is a classic and Hamm totally nails the tone that Chevy Chase had. I’m hoping they found a way for him to pop in as a cameo or playing some random character.

Is the original Fletch streaming on any platforms? Meaning for free for people who subscribe to those.

How is there not a website that shows every movie and where the fuck it is streaming? That would be great instead of having to go to each individual streamer and check on it.
