re: Fletch Won (2015?) S: Sudeikis

Jason Sudeikis has nabbed the iconic role of Fletch in Warner Bros.' Fletch Won, the first of a planned comedy franchise centered on the journalist character first played by Chevy Chase.

The Fletch movies are based on the Gregory McDonald mystery novels featuring an investigative reporter named I. M. Fletcher. The first book was written in 1974, before spawning 11 more. Chase made an indelible impact when he portrayed the character in the 1985 classic feature, which was followed by a sequel.

The project has long been in development as a remake or re-imagining. Warners picked up the rights in February 2011 and even then had a tough time cracking the code. After several writers didn't work out, David List, who reps the McDonald estate and is producing the project with Anonymous Content's Steve Golin and Michael Sugar, stepped in to take crack at it.

The draft passed muster with the studio and the producers, attracting Sudeikis, who is now in talks.

Fletch Won is an origin story, described as a gritty action comedy with heart and more tonally in line with McDonald's novels than the Chase movies.

The producers and the studio will now seek a director to take on the project, which is hoping to exude a Beverly Hills Cop or Midnight Run vibe.

Sudeikis spent 10 years on Saturday Night Live while also appearing in comedies such as Horrible Bosses and Hall Pass. His stock rose considerably last year (the same year he ended his run on SNL) after he starred in We’re the Millers, the drug road comedy from Warners’ arm New Line that grossed $270 million. The comedian has so far stuck to mostly playing supporting roles in his movies and Fletch will provide him the chance to carry a movie alone based on his charm and smarm.

Sudeikis, who is repped by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment, will begin shooting the indie romantic comedy Tumbledown with Rebecca Hall at the end of March and will shoot Sleeping with Other People with Alison Brie this summer. He returns with Jason Bateman and Charlie Day for Horrible Bosses 2, which opens Nov. 26.

I'm not totally against this casting...

I could easily go to 35 minutes if I'm playing "Simpsons Tapped Out" at the same time.

Surprisingly, not much has changed on that front in 3.5 years.

Sudekis solidified himself with We're The Millers though.

I actually like the casting of Sudeikis for this. He's can deliver just the right kind of sarcastic humor that the Fletch character needs.

Re: Fletch Won (2015?) S: Sudeikis

Before seeing We're the Millers I would have given a huge 'heck no', but I think he'll do well.

It's odd because the guy is not exactly a chameleon and has the same schtick, but he did it well in We're the Millers and I can see him pull it off (whereas on SNL it grated).

Re: Fletch Won (2015?) S: Sudeikis

This David List is a real sketchy guy. He hitched his wagon to Gregory Mcdonald late in Mcdonald's life (literary agent for near-death inactive author) for no other reason than to make a Chevy Chase-esque movie full of goofy disguises and now after 14 years of development hell he's basically resigned himself to taking the approach Kevin Smith wanted to take in the first place.

The Entertainment Weekly article on the Fletch Won disaster is pretty fascinating actually.

I'll have to read this, I'm just really happy Kevin Smith is no longer attached.

Re: Fletch Won (2015?) S: Sudeikis

Starting to see some movement with Sudeikis again...

Fletch lives again.

The comedy project that was to have acted as a franchise starter and a reboot of the 1980s Chevy Chase movie has found a new home at Relativity Studios after being let go by Warner Bros.

Relativity is teaming up with Boies/Schiller Film Group to acquire rights to the Fletch franchise, based on the original Gregory McDonald novels. The studio is currently in negotiations with Jason Sudeikis, who was eyed for the starring role of Fletch when it was set up at Warners.

McDonald’s 11 mystery books, the first of which was published in 1974, center on a reporter named I.M. Fletcher who juggles writing exposes while avoiding headaches caused by his two ex-wives.

Relativity and Boies/Schiller are now meeting with writers for the project, which is expected to be an origin story of sorts. It is unclear at this stage if it will be based on Fletch Won, the eighth novel in the series which gave the story Fletch’s first career break.

Relativity CEO Ryan Kavanaugh; Boies/Schiller's president Zach Schiller; David List, who reps the McDonald estate; and John Rickard will produce the film.

Relativity president Tucker Tooley, along with Anonymous Content's Steve Golin and Michael Sugar will executive produce.

This project would reunite Tooley and Sudeikis, who previously collaborated on We’re the Millers, on which Tooley was a producer, and Relativity's upcoming Masterminds that hits in theaters on August 7. Rickard and Sudeikis also previously worked together on several films, including most recently Horrible Bosses 2.

Relativity and Boies/Schiller Film Group previously partnered on Natalie Portman's Jane Got A Gun (along with The Weinstein Company) that is slated to be released September 4.

Richard Potter, exec vp of production and development, and Brett Dahl, senior vp of production, will oversee the film on behalf of Relativity.

Jon Hamm to Star in, Produce Miramax's 'Fletch' Comedy Reboot
9:00 AM PDT 7/15/2020 by Etan Vlessing

Greg Mottola will direct the film revival of Chevy Chase's 1985 comedy thriller based on Gregory McDonald's mystery novels.

Miramax and Jon Hamm are teaming for a reboot of Fletch, the 1980s Chevy Chase movie, based on the original Gregory Mcdonald mystery novels.

Hamm will star as I.M.Fletcher, the hotshot investigative reporter played by Chase in the 1985 neo-noir comedy of the same name. Mcdonald’s 11 mystery books, the first of which was published in 1974, center on Fletcher as he juggles writing exposes while avoiding headaches caused by his two ex-wives.

Hamm will also produce the latest movie adaptation alongside manager and producer Connie Tavel. And Greg Mottola, known for comedies like Superbad and Arrested Development, is set to direct, with Zev Borow penning the screenplay and David List executive producing.

The Fletch property has long been in development as a remake or re-imagining, including with Warner Bros. and Relativity Studios. Miramax's film adaptation will be based on the second book in the Fletch series, Confess, Fletch.

Hamm's Fletch character will find himself in the middle of multiple murders, one of which has him as a prime suspect. While attempting to prove his innocence, Fletch must find his fiancée’s stolen art collection, an inheritance she has acquired after her father goes missing and is presumed dead.

“Fletch’s duration over audiences- whether told on paper or the big screen- entertains all and we could not be more thrilled to see what twenty-first century twist these artists create,” Miramax CEO Bill Block said in a statement.

Hamm is repped by CAA and Forward Entertainment. Mottola is repped by UTA. Mcdonald is repped by David List.

I wouldn't mind just seeing a Chevy Chase movie again. I know he gets flack for being a dick. But he'd probably make a really good movie if he is around the right people.

Jon Hamm can be great at comedy. He's guest starred on 30 Rock a number of times. I look forward to seeing his take on this.

Hamm is really great at comedy. His guest spot on Curb Your Enthusiasm was also great. He could make a awesome Fletch.

Ham guarantee's I won't see it. He is easily the worst pick. Although Fletch is a smug asshole so maybe it will work.

Hamm seems like the perfect pick for an older Fletch. I would also still be down with Jason Lee, but I don't think he has much of a box office draw these days.

Hamm is the perfect fit. I like this.

If you haven't already, check out Audible's "Stinker Lets Loose", an audio drama that is basically a spoof of films like Smokey and the Bandit, Every Which Way But Loose, etc. but so masterfully done, with Hamm in the main role. Amazing.

re: Confess, Fletch (2022, D: Mottola) S: Jon Hamm

Now, Hamm has provided an important Fletch reboot update. The actor shared the update during an interview with Collider's Steven Weintraub for Hamm's new movie, Wild Mountain Thyme. When asked about the reboot, Hamm shared,

"We're hoping to start shooting in the springtime, in New York City - you know, fingers crossed. We've got an excellent script, and an excellent director [Greg Mottola, 'Superbad'] attached, and we're going to start casting soon. It's big shoes to fill, obviously. But as I've mentioned in previous conversations, it's a reboot, it's not a remake, so we're going back to the novels and really breaking it down but hopefully bringing what people want to see. So, fingers crossed!"

As someone that read every Fletch book prior to Mr Chase acting in the role (at least all the books released before the movie), I approve of Hamm. He fits the guy in the books better the Chase.

So we may finally get this ? If so, I hope they use the old Harold Faltermeyer score for some of it.

re: Confess, Fletch (2022, D: Mottola) S: Jon Hamm

The original Fletch and Fletch Lives is currently on Starz. I watched it a few weeks ago after having not seen it in well over 25 years.

It does not hold up at all IMO. I know it's an 80s movie, but it feels very dated.
