That's a pretty round-about way to say "I sold out."

That said, Jimmy Fallon would be a good second choice. He hasn't done anything since Almost Famous.

Der Krieger1979 08-18-03 10:31 AM

I've never found Jimmy Fallon funny at all. I'd rather see Ben get the job personally.

CaptStormy 08-18-03 03:30 PM

Ben and Kevin are close friends in real life. As long as Ben's calender is okay i would not be surprised that he does the Fletch Movies.

Spooky 08-18-03 03:39 PM

My question is this:

Are there really a lot of people anxious to see another Fletch movie? Those who loved the Chevy Chase films will be disappointed by the lack of slapstick in this new movie, and those who hated the first films will stay away because...well, they hated the first films. Don't get me wrong, I'll see it because I know Kevin's a good director - but with so many movies that COULD be made...why Fletch?

Sunday Morning 08-20-03 09:40 PM

quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
...Chevy is not the mark from which we must start. Go read the books: Fletch is not Chevy Chase.
Go read the books: there IS no slap stick.

See, the thing is, thanks to "SNL", [Jimmy] Fallon's got a rabid fan-following. His college gigs are big draws just like [Adam] Sandler's were, prior to his breaking out in movies.

In Harvey's perspective, Lee has been the star of movies that didn't open, nor go on to earn very much. So, actually, to Harvey, the unproven Jimmy Fallon is potentially worth taking a risk on, as he hasn't struck out yet.

If you read the book, Ben [Affleck]'s actually the closest to the character. Lee's definitely closer if you were doing the Chevy version of Fletch, but Ben - the REAL Ben, not a Ben you've seen onscreen or on talk shows before - is closest to the book version of Fletch. And the book version is the Fletch we're making.

I love Lee. I can't imagine anyone would doubt that, even now. I fought for Lee, for almost three years now (Harvey bough the Fletch library for us the night of the first "Bounce" test screening, which was long before I even had a first draft of "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back"). And recently, I had Harvey in the best bargaining position of my entire nearly-ten year career, at which time, I forced the Lee-as-Fletch issue once again. And even then, he was still resolute.

And I'd said before "If it's not Lee, I'm not doing it." Said that for at least a year, hoping to send Miramax a clear message. They got the message, alright - but rather than relenting and giving Lee the greenlight, they were just going to let the option on the books lapse. And I'm sorry - I don't want to see someone else making a Fletch flick that yet again doesn't resemble the character in the books that have been so influential on my writing. So I opted to stay with the flick, minus Lee.

What can I say? I took a swing. ****, I took a lot of swings. Had Miramax agreed to Lee, this flick would've been made BEFORE "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back." But it just wasn't to be.

So you've got two choices: either grumble about the Lee-less Fletch movie we're going to make from now until the end of time, or open yourself up to the idea that maybe - just maybe - our Fletch flick is gonna be good, regardless of who gets cast.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is pretty sad.

DRG 08-20-03 10:03 PM

I won't see the new movie unless one of the following is Fletch:

David Prowse
Marlee Matlin
Shaquille O'Neal
Sammo Hung
Dakota Fanning
Gunnar Hansen

KTIK 08-20-03 10:06 PM

Two Kevin Smith films in a row I have no plans on seeing. Way to go, Kevin. Getting worse and worse with each flick.

gcribbs 08-21-03 01:45 AM

I will give Kevin Smith the benefit of the doubt and see how it looks before deciding to pass on what might be a good movie.

One actor will not cause me to not see a movie.

Yo, O'Neal was da bomb in Kazaam!

I might see this, but not if it has Jimmy Fallon. I don't know why people find Jimmy Fallon funny. He seems like some kid who sniffed glue while watching Adam Sandler and Mike Myers do their best skits on SNL, and decided to ape their performances. He does nothing that hasn't been done better. His stupid songs are so bad. His skits are horrible because he LAUGHS AT HIS OWN JOKES DURING THE SKIT. The jokes he writes are obviously funnier to himself than to his audience. How did he get such a rabid fan base? Is this because Mike Myers has only been doing Austin Powers lately and Sandler has been doing Punch Drunk Love (which is an amazing film, but wouldn't appeal to the fanbase that liked The Waterboy) and Anger Management (which just isn't funny)? Are people really SO desperate for a new comic hero that they turn to Jimmy Fallon, who has only been marketed as one? How long until people realize he has ZERO talent?

If you can't tell, he bothers me.

I agree with literally every single word you wrote.

I've basically gone from saying, "A new Fletch, cool, I hope Jason Lee is staring" to "Please God let it be anyone but Jimmy Fallon."

Groucho 08-21-03 11:37 PM

Come on, why all the hate for Jimmy Fallon? Have you seen Almost Famous...completely different than anything that he's done on SNL.

Way to keep an open mind. Let's wait and see what the K-man can do without tearing him down first, eh?

Pants 08-22-03 05:41 PM

I agree with everything supermallet says above. Jimmy Fallon sucks

KTIK 08-22-03 06:34 PM

"Way to keep an open mind. Let's wait and see what the K-man can do without tearing him down first, eh?"

Then can we tear him down for that awful Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back movie?

groovrbaby 08-22-03 06:58 PM

Boo to Fallon. He honestly made me stop watching SNL because of his crappy delivery. Well, that and the writing, but hell, i'm just going to blame that on him, too. He managed to get on my nerves in Almost Famous for the 10-odd minutes he was in the thing. It must be the way he looks or the sound of his voice or something... :)

Fletch Won (201?) S: Sudeikis

Kevin Smith says so himself:

Groucho 03-01-05 09:11 AM

Not a bad choice. I'd still prefer Jason Lee.

B.A. 03-01-05 09:26 AM

I could live w/ that.

Geofferson 03-01-05 09:32 AM

I can see him in this.

Michael Corvin 03-01-05 10:51 AM

That is a solid second choice.

"If you want Jason Lee, but you can only get Zach Braff... WAIT."

;)

MasterofDVD 03-01-05 10:58 AM

I guess that would be a good runner up choice. I didn't care for Garden State that much but I still thing he's a good actor and might be well suited for this role.

Third Baseman 03-01-05 06:06 PM

Great choice.

Cygnet74 03-01-05 06:11 PM

ryan reynolds' mannerisms remind me of chevy chase. always thought he'd make a good "young" fletch. hope braff doesn't play Fletch as a neurotic.

The Nature Boy 03-01-05 06:46 PM

Jesus that's terrible. Why F with the perfect guy for the role, Lee?
