Yeah Babel was the only other nomination I would be happy if it won.

Crash over Brokeback Mountain was a travesty though...

Screw Brokeback, it's all about Munich. -wink-

The academy often gets it wrong. In 2007 they got it right. :)

I agree. I far prefer No Country over There Will Be Boredom.

There Will Be Blood was robbed at the 2008 Oscars, not 2007.

The Departed won the 2007 Best Picture Oscar.

My bad :( And it wasn't robbed, it lost to a far superior movie.

It did? We must have been watching different telecasts... I guess that's what I get for watching the real one. -wink-

When I got back from seeing TWBB, one of my brothers asked me if it was the better movie (TWBB vs. NCFOM) and I told him "They're so different that I can't even compare them except in terms of which I think is most likely to win the oscar... No Country"

PopcornTreeCt 06-30-08 04:53 PM

The Departed is one of the better Oscar winners.

The Departed is fucking great man. Usually Scorsese pictures are driven by focusing on a single character (Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, etc) Here, its driven by a complex story composed of many characters. It was very well done. How can you not like the intro? Nicholson's dialogue over Gimme Shelter. Its fucking classic.

+1

I don't fell it is Marty's best (that would be Goodfellas) but this flick is great for the exact reasons you described.

I love the intro.
The movie still is not that great. It's a 3-stars-out-of-5 movie.
I liked it better when it was called Infernal Affairs. Or L.A. Confidential. Or even Reservoir Dogs.

(Same with Magnolia. Great intro, hated the movie...)

Infernal affairs is so much better than The Departed it isn't even funny.

While I didn't enjoy The Departed there was no way Little Miss Sunshine was going to win, even though it's enjoyable, and Letters From Iwo Jima was hurt by the fact it's in another language even though it's a fine film. Honestly, I don't think any of the three should be labeled a Best Picture winner but someone had to win. I haven't seen the other two.

I'm not really a fan of Scorsese but his first Oscar should have been for Raging Bull if anything.

yep...

Infernal Affairs is great but it's great for different reasons. The Departed has much more interesting characters while Infernal Affairs has the greater storyline. I can't say either one is better than the other...though Infernal Affairs didn't have Mark Wahlberg...

Uhhhmmm.... What about Forrest Gump? And not only did it win it beat both Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption...

porieux 07-01-08 08:15 PM

The Departed was good IMO. Easily 100x the film Crash was (either version but specifically the one that one an award).

The Departed won the 2007 Best Picture Oscar.

It was for the calendar year of 2007, though. So No Country For Old Men was selected over There Will Be Blood and the other nominees as the Best Picture of 2007 and received its Oscar at the 80th Academy Awards ceremony held in February 2008. And The Departed won the Oscar for Best Picture of 2006 even though the ceremony was held in February 2007.

RichC2 07-01-08 09:53 PM

From my understanding, despite that, it's still the 2008 winner.

But whatever, I was just being a jackass.
