NOTE: If grosses stop for a movie, it means that the respective studio is no longer tracking it on a daily basis. The exceptions are IFC, New Line, Miramax, Artisan and Lions Gate. They don't do daily box office, so estimates are made for their movies based on partial data in order to fill out the top 12. So movies from these studios are more apt to disappear from the daily chart.

Doesn't take much to be #1 this week - and with the eastern part of the country enjoying a blizzard, it'll probably be one of the worst box office weekends in a long time.

ELEKTRA will do fine in the very end. But sadly, it doesn't seem to be a raging success.

Glad to see "In Good Company" is hanging in there. Just saw it this week and really enjoyed it. Hopefully good word of mouth will keep it around.

So, needless to say, this is the first weekend in a long time that I won't be seeing a movie at a theater (and I usually see two or three a weekend).
And, also very glad to see In Good Company doing so well. A good movie that almost no one I have talked to has heard of.
(And, on Elektra... really? I mean, it was a horrible movie.)

Elektra is shaping up to be the first crash and thud of the year, but it looks like it might be supplanted by Assault on Precinct 13. Coach Carter is pulling a White Noise trajectory (which, I predict, will also be the case with Are We There Yet). Fockers continues to pull in amazing numbers -- I don't think anyone saw *that* coming. Everything else is dropping as expected, although the Oscar contendors (Sideways, Aviator, Million Dollar Baby) are hovering in limited du

Wow. That's a nice 70% drop for Elektra.
Yeah, it'll top out around $30 million. Will FOX care? Probably not. The film was done on the cheap and I'm sure we will see a DVD release by late March/early April.

I had hoped better for Assault but its not everyone's cup of tea. I hope it gets a quick turn around on DVD. I liked it for a remake and it would be a nice companion to hte far superior Carpenter verison.

This is just sad. I can't believe Are We There Yet (with it's whopping 11% rating on the tomatometer) made over 18 million dollars. I know it's January, but come on people. There are so many other great movies still playing from December that you don't have to resort to seeing terrible stuff like this.

The movie-going public are getting dumber and dumber! Are We There Yet?!?! I had never even heard of it until I looked at the box office for this weekend! Ice Cube pulling a friggin family movie! WTF! This is direct to video fodder and movie-goers make this the #1 movie...gawd...
Bummer on Elektra, sweet flick, stupid people want to see a generic Hoosiers rip-off and Cube playin nice rather than a fun comic action flick. Least the shitty Assault remake is doing worse! Ha!

Nonetheless, a weak month for a bunch of weak movies.
The only movie I am watching is the Aviator, which at 58 million, still should stick around for a while. With Oscar nominations coming on Tuesday, it has a chance of seeing its BO grow and, maybe, cross the 100 mil mark. I know I still want to see it, but jsut haven't been to a movie in like a month.
Doesn't look like Phantom is going to be this years Chicago at all, though it's not really a complete bomb either. It should probably be able to coast along to a moderate total, though nothing great for something with that budget.

January is a shitty month for movies. This January, however, has had a better box office intake for new releases than any other year. Usually January is a month for films released in December to continue their legs. This January, we've had new movies go big and go home.
White Noise did huge business it's opening weekend due to a creative ad campaign and America's new found love for PG-13 ghost films. When word of mouth spread, it dropped over 50% in it's second weekend.
Coach Carter, despite mixed reviews, hit big it's opening weekend due to an MTV ad campaign and the fact that teenagers love going to the movies. It did help that Coach Carter was another PG-13 flick. Of course, once all the teenagers saw it in it's opening weekend, nobody was left to see it in it's second weekend. Thus another 50% drop for a film's second weekend.
Ice Cube's Are We There Yet? did big, because it's a family film that appeals to children. Children begged their parents to go, and their parents took them.

Once again the genius of Quigonjosh has people pointing out his comments.
Is that about the biggest conrtradiction EVER saying how dumb people are & then praising crap like Elektra. If you think Elektra is any smarter or more creative then the Ice Cube movie you are seriously kidding yourself. Calling Coach Carter "generic" yet you haven't seen it. Calling "Assault" shitty yet you refuse to se it. What are you, 13 years old?
Having the total opposite tasts in movies as Quigonjosh does, I'll point out something positive. I think it's awesome that Sideways has made over $30 million. That is a huge take for a movie like that, & very well deserved.
