Well, I'm just saying "meaingful" cinema isn't the only definition of elevating material above what the script calls for.

David Fincher is an artist-as-director, really. He doesn't seem to make films just for money; he seems to genuinely appreciate the story and concept. As such, I don't think he'd throw himself back into another serial killer flick, at least not in such a hurry. I realize Se7en was many years ago, but he's only made three films since.
perhaps he will be doing this film as an "in" to be able to do benjamin button next. these same two studios were going to co-finance that film and balked at the expense. he may have been approached to do zodiac first, make the studios some money (don't tell me the studios wouldn't expect a david fincher directed serial killer project to make money) and then be given the budget he asked for for benjamin button.

now i'm sure fincher wouldn't do a project he didn't feel something for purely to be able to do another film later, but i'm sure this is a story he would find intriguing and probably be interested in doing regardless.

let's also not forget that he has still been doing commercials and producing.

yes, that's why i qualified "meaningful" with "to me". i think what you're talking about can be very interesting to deconstruct and discuss. but i think fincher's work is still lacking a certain dimension that would make it more than the sum of its parts.

Gyllenhaal, Downey align for 'Zodiac'

Mark Ruffalo is in negotiations and Jake Gyllenhaal and Robert Downey have signed onto David Fincher's long-gestating thriller "Zodiac." Phoenix Pictures is producing. Gyllenhaal will play Robert Graysmith, the journalist and author of the two books, "Zodiac" and "Zodiac Unmasked," upon which the film is based. Downey will play fellow reporter Paul Avery, and Ruffalo would play the San Francisco homicide inspector in charge of the case. The books revolve around the real-life tale of a serial killer known as the Zodiac Killer, who terrorized San Francisco for 25 years. Graysmith and Avery worked at the San Francisco Chronicle, which the killer used as a conduit to communicate with authorities.

Thanks for the update, devilshalo. Although I'd rather see Benjamin Button moving forward, anything from Finch is welcomed!

That doesn't mean he won't write a good script for this project. Akiva Goldsman won an Oscar for writing "A Beautiful Mind" and also wrote the upcoming Oscar contender "Cinderella Man". This is the same guy who wrote "Lost in Space" and what I consider to be the worst movie ever, "Batman & Robin".

Makes sense now -- wouldn't expect to see Anthony Edwards noted on the poster.

Did anyone notice the waterfront exterior shot of San Francisco looks as though it's being created with CGI?

First test screening reviews. Sounds like this could be amazing. Fincher is the man.
