"Suicide Club"...what a hauntingly good movie!

I was totally riveted by this little gem. I had heard some mixed things and kinda went in not thinking I would like it to much after the "Ichi the Killer" debacle. But I absolutely liked this movie a lot and paid attention more so than I ever thought. It was hauntingly beautiful, transfixing, poetic, despairingly sullen, but ultimately affirming. Hard to explain, but bottom-line is it was extremely and surprisingly enjoyable.

Anyone else...

i saw this one a while ago. it had me really into it right up until the end. just not enough closure for my taste, but it doesn't suprise me since that was more in line with the style of the movie.

that was one weird movie...there is still a scene which is so strange its jarringly creepy. I thought it was pretty good though. Like most japanese films I end up feeling like "wtf just happened for the last 90 minutes" when its over.

it's bloody in a more comical sense...when something tragic happens, they spray red stuff all over the place, but you never ever get the feeling it is real blood. Very similar to the constant blood sprays in "Kill Bill: vol. 1"

Wow, I was pretty unimpressed with this movie. It started out great (although the silly blood spatters was a bit much) and I was totally into it until the Bat got kidnapped. After that the movie completely fell apart and the ending seemed completely nonsensical.

I watched the Japanese release titled Suicide Circle and it may have slightly different extras. Compare the trailer for the movie with the actual movie (as it includes some stuff in the hospital that was cut out). I watched the trailer after I had seen the movie and while being unimpressed by the film I was really creeped out by the trailer, particularly the hairy fax machine . That was the movie I was hoping for and I'm disappointed now that it was right there and just didn't deliver.

Suicide Club is an excellent movie. It has some understated but weird comedy, gruesome near-parodic horror, and this undertone of despair.

Sion Sono as it turns out is incredibly erratic. I've watched his other films hoping for something as good as Suicide Club but nothing else seems to come close. Haven't seen Noriko's Dinner Table yet, which is his new one, considered to be the prequel or sequel to Suicide Club, so hope springs eternal.

To me, Ichi The Killer was everything Suicide Club was not: Funny, exhilarating, titillating, complex, layered, and thought provoking. Suicide Club felt sloppy, poorly scripted, and terribly acted.

I'm not sure but I don't think the thread title is a question which makes it almost not exist.

I remember being freaked out by a pic someone posted in one of the other threads Tom posted
Spoiler:
The mass subway suicide
and it made me go out and rent it.

But overall, the movie tried too hard at pulling well.....nothing off. It shocked a little but just burned out as it went along.

We'll have to start a thread about Scott's (I don't search) threads that end with a "!"

I seem to recall liking it, but that's about as far as my memory goes with this topic.

For those of you unaware, the film's prequel/equal/sequel Norkio's Dinner Table came out to DVD today. I'm going to sit down in a few minutes and watch it.

I am tired so I don't know if I'll be able to tackle the film's 160 (!!!!) minute running time.

And for those of you curious, the DVD beats the (awful) Suicide Club release. Why? It's anamorphic, has removable subtitles and about 50 minutes of special features. Christ, I hate TLA Releasing.
