CNN: 10 Blockbusters to Watch for in 2005

Gleaned from the article (in no particular order)...

Coming to a theater near you, 2005
On deck: 'Star Wars Episode III,' 'Batman,' 'Kong'

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Most years look good on paper before they get under way, since Hollywood always fields enough high-profile movies to make any year sound promising.

Of course, there's no way to know, sight unseen, which films will prove to be box office winners. A year ago, for instance, who would have predicted that "The Passion of the Christ" would gross $370 million domestically, nearly matching "Spider-Man 2's" $373 million?

Nonetheless, looking ahead at 2005 suggests there are enough high-profile films in the pipeline to keep Hollywood in good spirits. Here's a quick look at 10 prime releases arriving later this year for which there are very high hopes. Opening dates, of course, are always subject to change:

1. George Lucas' "Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" (May 19)

2. Steven Spielberg's "The War of the Worlds" (June 29)

3. Ridley Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven" (May 6)

4. Christopher Nolan's "Batman Begins" (June 17)

5. Michael Bay's "The Island" (July 22)

6. Mike Newell's "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" (November 18)

7. Shawn Levy's "The Pink Panther" (September 23)

8. Martin Campbell's "The Legend of Zorro" (November 4)

9. Peter Jackson's "King Kong" (December 14)

10. Mel Brooks' and Susan Stroman's "The Producers" (December 21)

I'm looking forward to all 10 of those.

Looks like CNN had a typo.

Wow . . . Goblet Of Fire already? That was pretty fast compared to the other releases . . . guess they have to film them fast while the kids are still young. :)

Looks like a pretty solid list.

I'm still not sure about the remakes of Pink Panther and The Producers, and I'll need to see a trailer or something before I start getting interested about The Island. I'd replace those three with Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Chronicles of Narnia, and Cars or Sin City and that would probably be my top 10.

Actually, there was less time between the first 2 movies, and the wait between 3 and 4 is almost the same as the wait between 2 and 3

Harry Potter 1 = Nov 16 2001
Harry Potter 2 = Nov 15 2002
Harry Potter 3 = June 4 2004
Harry Potter 4 = Nov 18 2005

Harry Potter 5 is already schedule for June 2007 and Harry Potter 6 is pencilled in for November 2008.

Wow! I never would have guessed that . . . it seems like the break in between was much longer for the earlier ones. :hscratch:

Of course, my mind could be mixing the release of books in there with the movies . . .

I'm surprised "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" didn't make the list, or does that movie seem too quirky and British. Well, its my most wanted movie, anyway.

Wow, another year of sequels and remakes. What are the odds?

Geofferson 01-05-05 04:13 PM

I don't think The Pink Panther will be quite the blockbuster they apparently expect it to be.

In defense, this early on there's little known about many upcoming movies.. sequels and remakes have a familiarity to them and thus are easy to look forward to (or dread) prior to much knowledge.

As of right now I'll see all of those except The Island (don't know much about that one), The Pink Panther and The Producers.

Same here, HHGTTG and Serenity (Firefly Movie) are my most wanted this year.

Drexl 01-05-05 06:40 PM

The Producers will be an adaptation of the hit musical, so it's not your typical remake. I think it will be good.

invisiblegt 01-05-05 07:31 PM

Aside from The Producer's (not a fan of the play, sorry) and The Pink Panther (someone, please tell Martin to stop making movies), looks like a good list.

Hitchhiker's Guide. Sin City. A few other's I'm missing... Then you've got yourself a list.

PopcornTreeCt 01-05-05 08:09 PM

Kingdom of Heaven doesn't come out for awhile. bummer.

Coral 01-05-05 08:16 PM

I have absolutely no interest in any of those movies.

silentbob007 01-05-05 08:21 PM

I really don't see The Producers making so much that it would be considred a blockbuster ... I don't care how popular the stage version is.

RyoHazuki 01-05-05 09:48 PM

No Wonka?

Michael Corvin 01-05-05 09:52 PM

all look pretty solid to me.

Michael Bay still makes movies? :yack:

Well, until one of his films bombs, I imagine he'll continue to make films. Love em or hate em, every one of his films have made a good amount of money. It will be interesting to see if no Bruckheimer helps at all. I suspect...not. But hopefully he blows lots of things up real good, cause that's really his only talent.

Isn't Pixar releasing their final feature with Disney called "Cars" in the Summer of 2005 instead of Nov. 2005?
