Many people have complained about how bad the Yu Gi Oh movie was. I completely disagree with everyone's opinions that it is just a waste of money and time. If people werent so biased toward cartoons maybe they will realize that you have to get to know a TV Show Before Judging it. I honestly feel that this money is only for Die-Hard yu Gi Oh Fans. People who have watched the series will get a good idea of whats going on, to those who havent seen a single episode.

I think the critism goes beyond people not liking cartoons. For instance, Chris Tribbey reviewed <a href=http://dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=13157>Yu Gi Oh The Movie</a>, but he does have extensive background with anime...

I personally find that I enjoy Yu Gi Oh. However, I think it is ridicuously overpriced and the actual content is pretty poor. I mean the stories are so wishy washy and to the majority of the populus, will come off as complete crap. So I suggest I agree it's for the diehard fans... of which I am not. When I get around to it, I'll rent it... because I like Yu Gi Oh enough to watch it, but not enough to shell out major cash for it.

I watch it with my son, but it confuses me to no end.

"Cartoons" and "anime"....I shudder when those two words appear in the same sentence. It's like comparing He-Man to Akira.

The TV episodes, some of which I have seen (FUNimation DVDs), are not all that bad.....like MegaMan NT Warrior, they're entertaining for kids, and fun visually.

Yu-Gi-Oh The Movie was an awful waste of time, and it's only aim was to suck more money out of your dad's wallet. It did not advance the Yu-Gi-Oh story (at least not well), and sacrificed plot for repeated plugs for the card game. The creators should have just thrown a scrolling 1-800 number at the bottom. It would have been more honest.

Worst of all, on pure visual value, some of the episodes I've seen were actually better than the movie. The prolonged battle scene at the end was repetitive and, at times, cheap.

Like I said, the Yu-Gi-Oh faithful will watch and enjoy no matter what. But I feel obligated to warn the rest of humanity: Yu-Gi-Oh, Yu-Gi-NOOOOOO!!!!

My kids asks me to play the card game with him all the time and I lose horribly as I don't know what works well with what combo. "What..I can't play him til I tribute a what? What monster was reborn? Can I bring back a monster?" (I hold my own with Duel Masters tho.)

So...the movie helped me understand the game a bit more. It wasn't any worse than the Pokemon movies.

Why? They are the same thing.

When I hear cartoons, I think Mickey Mouse and My Little Pony. Of course, others think Simpsons and Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

You could argue anything animated is a cartoon, and anime is just Japanese cartoons. But anime covers such a broad range of themes (from the kids to hentai), while cartoons are, by definition, supposed to be funny.

Cartoons are defined as "a drawing which puts a comic construction on current events or people" and a comic is defined as "funny, or amusing." Much of anime is neither funny nor amusing.

But much of it is. People generally will say "anime" as any animated thing from Japan. Personally, I just refer to something as "animated."

In terms of the different themes, American cartoons don't even come close to anime: drama, horror, action, romance, porn, comedy, mystery. I was one of those "anime is just cartoons" people until I started watching it on a regular basis.

I prefer to look at cartoons as an American genre, the Saturday morning dose of humor, mostly geared toward kids. Adults here, for the most part, are made fun of if they watch cartoons. Look at the animated movies that make it to the big screen here in the U.S. Ninety percent are PG or G comedies "for the entire family."

In Japan, anime to them is a box office blockbuster movie to us, from G to NC-17 (and even XXX). The movies, TV, Pay Per View....anime, for all ages, is deeply ingrained. Children are not the only target audience.

It's splitting hairs, sure, but to lump anime in with the American cartoon is an oversimplification, I think.

In fact, I think I hear Miyazaki shrieking in horror! Hehe.....

You mean you understand that you can completely make up any rule you want as you go and the card you want is always the next card in your deck?

But now I'll always know what to do when faced with the "Silver Shining Blue Eyes Dragon" and all I have are two magic cards, and a "Reverse of Reverse" card face down, while my opponent only has the "Pyramid of Light" card to use and....aw, forget it.

I'll say it again: Give me poker. Hell, give the kids poker. You'll only have to buy one deck, and it never changes.

I commend you for trying and I'm sure your kids apreciate you trying as well. My kids don't want to play with me because they're afraid I might win(I won't because I don't know what the hell is going in with the game.)

alright guys! heres the scoop...

you guys will lose if you dont read the manual. The game is very simple to follow. 4 stars and below and be summoned right onto the field, 5 to 6 stars need can only be summoned by offering one monster from your side of the field. 7-8 stars need to offerings. As you have seen from the movie, there were cards call the Eyptian God Card, which need 3 offerings. Cards that say flip, are to be placed face down, and when attacked or flipped over, the effect will activate. Trap Cards = Purple Color & Magic Cards = Green Color. When you get a card, its pretty much self-explanatory. 5 monsters and 5 magic/trap cards are the maximum cards that you can play at one time. Now that you know the basics of the game, go out there and kick their butts!

If you want to watch anime cartoons on TV, ones like Yu Yu Hakusho and the Gundam SHows are really easy follow. Believe me, i know!

What would you label America's Batman, Justice League, Gargoyles, Transformers, etc? While there might be a funny moment, these shows were/are serious with their stories and wouldn't ever get labled comedies.

The term Anime is just the Japanese word for cartoons. It covers everything, even Disney cartoons imported are called anime over there. Using the term Anime to only mean 'Japanese made' cartoons is more of a fan term which has more or less become official.

Honestly it's all a moot point because in Japan all cartoons are labeled anime. There is no difference. There are American animated features just as deep as the Japanese make just as there are Japanese animated features just as shallow, if not worse, than the worst produced in America. They both have their good and bad.

This incorrect use of the word anime bugs me almost as bad as when people in the US or abroad actually think being otaku is a good thing.

That said, I didn't bother with the Yu Gi Oh movie cos I hate the cartoon. Yet, I really dig the comics cos they, at first, deal with a different game almost every issue instead of just being one prolonged card game. That and the comic has a better sense of fun rather than the overly self important cartoon.

Still, I've heard fans speak of this movie in a mixed manner. Some dug the duels but others complained that it was just duels and pretty much glossed over most of the character development in the series up to that point.

I felt the same way. I enjoy watching the show a lot, although I'm pretty far behind on current episodes. Don't really care about the card game itself at all. I thought the movie was pretty enjoyable and something any fan of the show would like. Most of the reviews I read were obviously not familiar with the show.

You can imagine my confusion when I played a card and a big animated creature didn't appear over my head! :)

I liked the movie... but won't buy the DVD since its Fool Screen.

I always joke with my wife that they were going to have a card that was blank and they could fill it in with whatever they thought of to win.

Much to my amusment the other day, when watching one of the shows, the bad guy gave bug boy and dino boy a blank card. I was rotfl !
