Pretty impressive for <b>National Treasure.</b> I thought it looked like a flop. Really big drop for <b>The Incredibles,</b> looks like Spongebob stole all the kiddies away. Congrats to <b>The Grudge</b> for breaking $100mil!

I hope Spongebob will beat National Treasure for the weekend.

I wouldn't be surprised if Spongebob is no. 1 for the weekend. I sense a Saturday drop for National Treasure.

I'm glad the remake did well here since I enjoyed Ju-On 2 more than the originals, so I'm looking forward to the remake of that. <i>Saw 2</i> on the other hand...

Definitely too close to call on the top 2 with the kid-movie factor. Incredibles dropped more than I thought it would. :(

I cannot believe how big of a bomb Alfie is. I never thought it would do great or anything, but those numbers are just horrible.

I am surprised by National treasure. I figured 25 million would be about the highest this movie could even dream about.

In all honesty, at the current moment, the theaters are full of kiddie/family films.

- National Treasure is a PG action film released by Walt Disney.
- The Incredibles is an animated PG action film released by Walt Disney and Pixar.
- Spongebob Squarepants is an animated PG film released by Paramount and Nick.
- The Polar Express is an animated G film released by Warner Brothers.
- Shark Tale (still in 900 locations) is an animated PG film from DreamWorks.

And in upcoming days/weeks, we have Christmas With The Kranks and Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events. A lot of family/kiddy oriented films this Holiday season, so I'm not shocked that The Incredibles is finally starting to get a beating.

I would have never thought that The Polar Express would bomb at the box office. At the rate their going, the film will not make a profit. I guess Tom Hanks isn't a bankable movie star now.

The main problem was releasing it a week after The Incredibles, talk about cocky, should have waited for December but i think it'll have a good run in theatres, especially now that theyre running ads highlighting the acion, of which there's a nice amount of in the movie, defintely suprised me.

I agree, I believe that was a terrible, terrible market move.

IMO, It should have opened this upcoming Thursday (Thanksgiving), where it likely would have opened with higher numbers than it's current gross. Or perhaps they saw Christmas with the Cranks to be more competition than Surviving Xmas (heh) and Incredibles.

Hanks drawing power has faded substantially. If Polar Express bombs that will be three in a row for Hanks (Terminal, Ladykillers) this year. He hasn't fallen to Eddie Murphy or Kevin Costner lows yet but he is headed that way and needs to right the ship with a hit.

However, Polar Express will probably have some legs. It really didn't fall that much this past weekend and it will probably continue only moderate drops through Christmas. It might even tick up a notch over Thanksgiving but I doubt it makes back the huge budget (165 mil??) over the long haul.

Hmm... National Treasure snagged the adults and Spongebob the kids. I'm surprised The Incredibles didn't drop *more* than it did, but I predict some healthy legs there.

And no worries about Tom Hanks. Given that he's about to star in "The DaVinci Code", his b.o. clout will return. Is Peter Scolari smirking? Perhaps. But the thing to remember is

Feh, Hanks hasn't gone anywhere. Insanely popular though he is, he's a damned good actor and has taken some interesting chances this year, particularly liked "Ladykillers." "The Polar express" looked like it would suck and that's why it's bombing, it has nothing to do with Hanks' name attached to it I'd wager. But I guess it's time for backlash to begin...

Well, not everybody thought Polar Express looked like it sucked. Obviously Hanks name attached didn't help, it's not that there was a backlash, its that people didn't want to see the movie just cause he was in it. That's what starpower is, drawing in crowds regardless of the movie. This year has been weak for him, and PE I think suffered the most from first of all being a unique and new type of movie with an ENORMOUS budget, and also from having a downright awful opening date (between Sponge and Incredibles).

I think the thing is, Hanks movies this year have all at least been profitable, with PE being the only one that might be a loser. But give Hanks his credit...unlike most big stars, this year he tried three rather different and very unique films. Usually those types of films are much harder to sell then a big budget blockbuster with a typical story. And as said before, with DiVinci code he'll make bank again and be right back on top.

Of course, Bruckheimer has to feel a lot better now with National Treasure, after the King Arthur fiasco.

TOM HANKS IN 2004

I would just like to say The Ladykillers did not bomb, it broke even. It made $40 million in the box office domestically, while it only cost $35 million to shoot. Add in video rentals and sales, plus international gross (an additional $40 million), and it made some money back.

I would just like to say The Terminal did not bomb. The film made $80 million in the box office domestically, while the film cost around $60 million to make (Spielberg is very cautious when it comes to budgets). Add in upcoming video rental and sales, plus international gross (an additional $100 million), and the film made it's money back.

Tom Hanks makes movies that bomb? I doubt it. While the film choices he did surely didn't have huge pay days like Saving Private Ryan and Cast Away; at least they all broke even (or will).

Its odd that the top 4 films are all rated PG when the rating has been practically non-existant latley.

The reason I say Hanks has faded a bit is just what jaeufraser said. People will no longer go see a film just because he is in it.

Here is a good example: Cast Away. If Hanks isn't in that film, it bombs or at least no way it makes 200 mil. If Cast Away was released next year I doubt it breaks 100 mil. Yes, still maybe a moderate hit but not the blockbuster it was in Hank's prime. Same might be said for Forrest Gump. Terminal and Lady Killers were the same type of film. Terminal even had Spielberg's name attached and didn't break 100 mil.

I believe the slide started with Road to Perdition. People went to see that film just because Hanks was in it. They were disappointed. Now with the duds (I won't say bombs :)) this year, people are more sceptical. I still think he needs a hit to stop the slide.

The Polar Express is G, not PG. Now if Finding Neverland was in the top four... maybe this means the PG rating might slowly be making a comeback, who knows...

Tom Hanks, haven't been "huge" this year, because he's taking risks (kind of like Robin Williams last year). With the exeception of The Polar Express, his films this year are simply not reaching mainstream status. Look at The Ladykillers which was a film by the Coen Brothers. Last time I checked, when I think of the Coens, I don't think of mainstream. But then again, there was The Terminal, which despite being one of Spielberg's most mainstream films in the past decade, was a stretch simply for the role that Hanks played.

But how can you say that roles like Hanks played in Terminal and LadyKillers were any more of a "risk" than his roles in Forrest Gump and Cast Away? I don't see it. I think he has just chosen some bad films that haven't clicked with the public. I know plenty of people that loved FG and CA that absolutely hated Terminal and Road to Perdition. (Those people didn't even bother with Lady Killers.)

And I know tons of people that hate FG and CA, yet love Terminal and Road to Perdition... hell I am one of those people myself...

Yeah but still, all those roles were risks. Hanks takes no more risks now than he ever did.

Interesting numbers. National Treasure is a much bigger hit than anticipated (I wouldn't have thought it'd match it's opening weekend, but hey it is) and looks like a lot of 20 plus mil weekends this weekend.

The supposed flop Polar Express looks to be picking up some steam. While it's still no blockbuster compared to its budget, if it can hold like it seems to be doing it should be able to clear at 100 million no problem. Some decent legs it's showing, which is good, as I thought it was an excellent film.
