Exactly. Those are some of the greatest comedies of all time.

Just his appearance at the Super Bowl pushed the 49ers to a win.

Re: Do you miss John Candy?

He ruled in the 80's when I was a kid as he could pull off the loveable fat guy in Stripes, the loveable annoying guy in Planes, Trains and Automobiles and the loveable family guy in Summer Rental. He could even play the straight guy in The Great Outdoors and give all the great lines to Dan Akroyd. That era of SCTV and SNL produced so many great comedians that it's probably a good reason why the state of comedies are so crappy today.

If he had lived longer there would have been more great movies together with John Hughes.

24 years already... wow.

If he were still alive today I picture him as he looked in his late 30's/early 40's... it's hard to imagine him at the age of 68 today.

Wow, 24 years.

Hilarious skit from SCTV days where he plays Otis Campbell.

Re: Do you miss John Candy?

Absolutely, I miss him. So many funny films, and seemed to be a genuinely good guy.

I still find the ending of Planes, Trains and Automobiles to be very emotional.

A few celebrity deaths have deeply saddened me. John Candy and Phil Hartman both fit that bill...

4 years later and I still say this is true. Strangely enough, the other celebrity death that stings just my as much, if not a little more, is the person I would compare to John Candy the most - Chris Farley.

Re: Do you miss John Candy?

John Candy had such a genuine, down to earth, relatable quality about him. He seemed like he'd be the nicest guy in the world, and by all accounts, its because he was.

I always wonder what kind of roles he would gotten if he didn't pass. I think he could have gone on to have a career similar to Bill Murray or John Goodman. Same with Farley, Belushi and Hartman, I always wonder what could have been.

Re: Do you miss John Candy?

That's a great picture. Anyone have any idea where it was taken and under what circumstances? Is that on a film shoot or was it just a vacation?

Re: Do you miss John Candy?

I think I comment in this thread whenever it comes up but I definitely still do. He just had a certain quality about him that was funny and also endearing and relatable. I think he just seemed like a guy with a big heart and seemed very much down to earth/real. Probably one of a handful of celebrities who’s death really saddens me.

Re: Do you miss John Candy?

I had a thought about John Candy last night. His greatest role is Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. I think everyone can agree on that. I wish he didn’t have the mustache. It’s his greatest role but he doesn’t look like his usual self. It’s like if Bogart had a mustache in Casablanca. It’s his defining role. I wish he looked like his iconic self.

What is great about the movie (and is something that severely lacks in todays comedy) is that the 2 characters are looked upon by the audience in a totally different way by the end of the movie. The movie starts off where John Candy is a annoying, mooching guy who won't shut up. Steve Martin is this quiet, family guy who just wants to get home and you kind of feel for him. By the end of the movie and you learn more about John Candy and his past, he is the one you really feel bad for.

Same here. I always avoided his movies when I could. Just didn't get his brand of humor, I guess.

Re: Do you miss John Candy?

Dammit I still miss this guy. I should rewatch something of his. This also reminds me, I’ve meant to pick up the retro VHS slipcover edition of Who’s Harry Crumb too but haven’t yet.
