Movies that "challenged" the Miller Test.

What movies have been the subject of controversy over obscenity? Have there been any that could be deemed offensive according to the Miller Test?

Please refrain from silly answers.

I'll bite.

What the hell is the "Miller Test"?

If you don't want silly answers, don't assume everybody knows what you mean by "Miller Test."

Rich Sawyer 11-11-04 12:11 PM

I figured if people didn't know, they wouldn't respond if I asked nicely.

Groucho 11-11-04 12:16 PM

Since the OP wants for some reason to keep the "Miller Test" secret, here it is for those that don't know:

The Miller test is the United States Supreme Court's test for determining whether speech or expression can be labelled obscene, in which case it is not protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and can be prohibited.
The Miller test was developed in the 1973 case Miller v. California. It has three parts:

1.) Whether the average person, applying contemporary community standards, would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest,

2.) Whether the work depicts/describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable state law,

3.)Whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value.
Most mainstream movies meet criteria #3. A lot meet criteria #1. Very few meet #2.

Look noob - Why don't you just explain it in the original post and save everyone some time?

Thanks Groucho.

How's that strategy working out for you?

There haven't been any movies that I can recall that have ever come under the scrutiny of the Miller test, the more memorable cases of the Miller test being applied to the arts are all music, aren't they?

I mean hell, if XXX movies can be released, then I can't imagine anything that would fail the Miller test.

Maybe German poop videos. MAYBE.

I think that falls under the catagory of educational value. I mean, how else are 12 year olds supposed to figure out how stuff works?
