Stargate plot question

I did a search on this, and found a ton of Stargate threads from the past, but nothing regarding this. This is something that's always bugged me about this movie.

Toward the beginning, when Daniel has his constellation revelation, they finally show him the Stargate. First of all, they supposedly spent all that time trying to decipher the symbols, and it was Daniel that finally stumbled upon it. They made it clear that he figured out in two weeks something they couldn't get in two years. Yet, even though they were "stumped", they already had all this equipment in place, complete with interstellar tracking. While gawking at all this equipment, he identifies the seventh symbol. Then they start everything up, and when they lock in the sixth chevron, the old lady tells him "this is as far as we've ever gotten." So, what I'm hearing is they locked in the sixth symbol, and instead of just trying different symbols for the seventh one in a process of elimination, they just stopped and shrugged their shoulders.

Bottom line, what was the purpose of bringing in Daniel if they already had everything figured out to the point where they had all the equipment in place, and had the sequence of the first six symbols? They make it fairly obvious they knew what they were doing already.

Just wondered if this bugged anyone else.

Are we sure they knew it was only seven at that point? Maybe "this is as far as we've gotten" meant "we don't know how many more are required and which ones they are".

If they knew it was only seven, then yeah: they should of just tried all of them.

"Logical" isn't the first word that comes to mind in regards to this movie.

They probably weren't sure of the outcome of just randomly picking a 7th symbol, especially since up to that point the gate is shaking with instability and a wrong choice might mean boom! .....there's always a boom. :)
