Alfie

I, for one, did not know that this is a remake of the 1966 film of the same name starring Michael Caine.

Anyway, anyone plan on seeing this? While Jude Law seems to be the busiest actor in Hollywood since he is practically in everything these days, I'm still looking forward to seeing this movie.

Ebert's 3-star review here.

Film Jerk

http://www.filmjerk.com/new/article-1090--0-0.html

"The film is anchored by Law's performance, which is nothing short of amazing. He can make Alfie's often reprehensible actions evaporate with the wink of his eye and the cock of his head, which is impressive considering the sticky relationship corners the character finds himself in. Law is perfect for the role in every way, matching Caine's charms note for note, and only besting the maestro with his disarming good looks."

Saw it awhile ago with another forum member and wasn't all that impressed. It had a good direction and then in the end it just feels like the world shitted on law a bit to much. to much of a down note on it all.

Is this movie a white version of How To Be A Player?

Jackskeleton 11-05-04 02:53 PM

more like how life can be depressing as a player when all is said and done.

I wish I had known before today that it was a remake. I would have liked to have seen the original first.

The original is great. It was very edgy for it's time and when you see it you'll know what I mean. The ending of the original was also very heavy. The original Alfie got shit on a lot too.

The 2004 version is quite good. I saw it last week and was very impressed with Law.

I, for one, am glad with how the movie ended. Far better than most these days.

(Oh, and Law hasn't worked since around April. The movies being released now are ones he did over the past two years, if I remember correctly. The studios are just trying to cash in on his name...)

I might check this one out. I've listened to parts of the soundtrack, and really like what Mick Jagger did with the music. As for the movie, I think it looks pretty good and might check it out (but with The Incredibles and The Polar Express opening, it might not be for a little while).

Sounds interesting...I am going to have to check it out. I would definitely like to see the original before I see the remake.

I, for one, thought it was a pretty good little film. You really can't go wrong with Jude Law, though.. Even if a film he is in is total crap, he is still decent.

And his new girlfriend is sexy hot.

Oh and look for Jagger (with Dave Stewart) to be this year's Bob Dylan come Oscar time. I don't recall there being another song coming out from a film so far this year worth recognition.

i saw it stoned with a friend. we both loved it. law is fantastic in it

As a female, I've known my share of Alfies, and I'm not sure the themes of the film sit well with me. While I can take the film as the story of one Alfie, there are certainly men who can genuinely HAPPILY live Alfie's lifestyle, as well as women who do not fall apart being involved with an Alfie. And there is nothing wrong with that. I rather resented the bottomline neediness of most of the characters.

That being said, Jude Law was just perfect for the role, and not everyone could do the talking to the camera bit with success. He's not my type of "pretty", but he does have undeniable charm, the look in his eyes and a great smile.

I'm very hyped for this, and lately anything Jude Law has been attached to. I haven't been disappointed yet.

Geofferson 11-07-04 04:58 PM

I saw this the other day and liked it quite a bit. Law was cast perfectly in the title role and everything about this movie was enjoyable. Now I'll see if I can find the original anywhere.

bsktballDude1 11-07-04 09:05 PM

I saw Alfie today and I liked it quite a bit. As others have stated Law is perfect for the role, brilliant really (this has been a great fall for being of fan of Law's work). I liked how Alfie talked to the audience throughout the whole movie, I think it created a unique connection between the viewer and Alfie, and that works because he is essentially a lonely guy, but like he says in the movie he's pretty good at hiding his emotions.

I thought the direction was pretty strong and stylish as well. It had a great tempo, the freeze-frames, split screen backed up by the jazzy/rock music of Mick Jagger were all a lot of fun. I also liked how dramatic it got at the end of the film, and I actually felt kind of sad for the character of the charming but emotionally hidden Alfie.

It didn't do to well this weekend( around 5 million) and someone at Paramount is blaming.....

Spoiler:
the election earlier this week

I heard this on the FOX 11 News in LA this morning.

Penny Lane 11-08-04 09:01 PM

CM and I saw this yesterday, and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

SPiRAL 11-08-04 11:07 PM

I saw it today, and enjoyed it. Cool little movie.

wendersfan 11-09-04 09:08 AM

I loved the original (and actually wrote a paper about it as an undergrad) but I'll probably skip the remake.

Ketamine 03-19-05 02:26 PM

I really like the style of this film and Law was great. I think the end was missing something but otherwise a very enjoyable film.

DonnachaOne 03-19-05 04:24 PM

I loved the character, if not all of the film.
