Catch 21 09-09-04 03:04 PM

Cellular REview

A nice thriller, I didnt like Kim's script tho or was it her acting?
William H Macy is what saved this film.Even tho the script sucked, Macy's acting made me believe in his character. Oh yeah, The Last Comic Standing from season 1 makes a cameo appearance.

This review is hard to understand, perhaps it is a poem?
Details might have saved this review.

Catch 21 09-09-04 03:30 PM

I'll put it simple terms, you will like this movie if you liked:

Speed
Transporter
Run

Spoiler:
I didnt feel there was closure with the ex-girlfriend
it made everything in beginning with Ryan trying to prove himself worthless to the viewer

Joem 09-09-04 07:54 PM

Hmm...liked Speed, thought Transporter was passable...never seen Run. Where's that put me?

Fwiw, I think Cellular might be the trailer I laugh at (in a condescending manner) the most that is out in the theaters right now.

On my local radio station they have this guy call in from LA with reviews and news. This morning he reviewed this movie. He gave it 2.5 stars, but I do not think he saw it.

He said that Kim's character has her cell phone smashed by her kidnapper and she wires it back together and makes a call to someone. He said that it was unbelievable.

I call BS because the trailer clearly shows that her captor (Jason Statham) destroys an everyday standard home telephone, that Kim puts back together.

Duh.

Oh, this will be a rental for me.

I might check it out, as there are not a whole lot of good movies out right now. It got two thumbs up on the last Ebert & Roeper, which could be a good sign.

Geofferson 09-10-04 10:05 AM

Ebert's 3 1/2 star review here.

I may actually check this one out over the weekend.

This looks like it could be the second-best phone-based movie of the last couple of years.

Joem 09-10-04 10:59 AM

57% rating on rottentomatoes.....3.5 stars from Ebert (I haven't read the review yet though)....a comparison to Speed....there's an outside chance I might have to go see this now.

For those who have seen it, I ask you this: Is this a movie that if you've seen the trailer, you've seen the movie? Does he get the call, try to find her, shoot up the store to get a charger, try to find her some more, finally find her, overcome Jason Stratham, and roll credits? Because that's my impression. And if that's it, I'm not interested...but if someone can tell me there is more to it, I'd be more inclined to catch this in the theater.

Which, of course, is this:

STORY by Larry Cohen. Screenplay by Chris Morgan.

And that's part of the problem...

I think he's talking about a film from the early 90s starring Patrick Dempsey where he accidently kills some dude who happened to be the kid of a mob boss and he has to run for his life for the rest of the film... it was kinda cool.

Maxflier 09-10-04 10:43 PM

Yep,i read up on it in the link Catch 21 provided.Didn't sound as interesting as i had hoped though.

Frank TJ Mackey 09-11-04 12:10 AM

Didn't want to see this movie, but it end up being the most "fun" I've had at the movies in a while.

Nonstop action, a lot of funny lines with Bill Macy, and it's short.

Nicely packaged little thriller.

Trigger 09-11-04 05:58 AM

Caught the first 30 minutes of this, but they stopped the film for some reason and since we had snuck in we weren't going to wait around to find out why. Anyway - looked like it would be an entertaining dumb thriller. I'll probably try to go see it again in the next week or so.

In short: There IS more to it...

Corvin 09-12-04 01:07 AM

I thought it was okay. Okay leaning more towards bad-okay than good-okay. I didn't particularly like it (while I did like The Transporter and Speed), but I've definitely seen much, much worse.
