Does anyone recommend this as a blind buy? Any comments on it?

Definitely watch it in French. The dubbed version just makes the actors sound weird.

This movie is dark and will destroy your image of Santa Claus.

It will also make you think twice before you bitch about how much Advantage and Frontline cost for your dogs.

I don't know your movie tastes, so I'd say rent it before you buy it. The movie is very good, but it's definitely "out there" in a Terry Gilliam way. A friend showed me the movie and I went out and bought it the next day.

Yup, depends on your tastes... It's a little strange, to say the least, but also a very good film. Not something I - personally - would feel the need to keep around, I owned it and traded it, not much in the replay department for me... YMMV, what kind of films do you generally enjoy? Also has a pretty high MSRP for what you get... You could try the Columbia House route, it's available for enrollment (stop by the clubs folder for a good code and info if you've never done CH).

I keep seeing that collector's edition at Circuit City so I wanted to see if it was worth getting. It looks like it has that Dark City/Matrix look to it. Would you classify it sci-fi?

It's part sci-fi, sure, but it's more a very dark fable, full of imagination, surreal images, visual flair and larger-than-life characterisations. Either you feel it or you don't.....it's really not an explainable thing with this movie imo. To answer your question again, yes it's worth getting.

It's a dark fantasy. It could *almost* be sci fi, but it just misses the mark on the genre. Sci Fi fans like me really enjoy it.

Surreal describes the movie perfectly.

I preferred Delicatessen, but yeah - this is a pretty good film.

But rent he freakin' thing. These blind buy threads are so annoying. It's a very freaky & weird movie, the average movie goer is not going to like it.

One of my favorites. Worth a blind buy...but you might hate it (I guess that goes for any blind buy). It's not so weird that it's unwatchable by your average movie fan.

It's directed by the same guy who directed Amelie and Delicatessen, so you can see some similarities in those films.

I wouldn't recommend City of Lost Children as a blind buy. I didn't like it very much, although I do like the director's other films Amélie and Delicatessen. (As for Alien: Resurrection - let's all just pretend that one never happened.)

City of Lost Children is visually stunning, but the pacing is off. It drags at a lot of points. Still, its shortcomings don't ruin it. I also prefer Delicatessen and Amelie.
