Benji off the Leash, still going strong. It's nice to see that audiences of today have really embraced that old pooch. I'll be sad to see the day when one of his films doesn't turn a profit, and they have to put the ole' franchise to sleep.

Big drop off for AvP. Wonder if Collateral can make it to 100?

Yes, it's a measure of how numb your butt is after watching the movie. Example "Wow, I can bearly even feel my backside after watching that movie. It was definately a Numer 9 at the box office."

Pretty good NUMBERS for Open Water though. Doesn't look like anything else explosive happened at the box office this weekend. Pretty big drop off for AvP but I guess that was to be expected after all the bad word of mouth. Still it's already made more than it's $60 Million budget. Hopefully that's enough to warrant an Alien 5, made with more capable hands.

Collateral looks to top off around $90 mill. AVP dropping fast, surprising nobody. Excorcist will make AvP's dropoff seem like Titanic's. Princess Diaries's for the tween crowd and straight guys who should know better. Without a Paddle will be profitable. Open Water will make some nice coin. Bourne's doing gangbusters, like almond chinese ding. Village perceived as a flop but is actually a hit. Who thought bringing Benji back was a good idea? Why not C.H.O.M.P.S.? At least that had Valerie Bertenelli. No wonder she left Eddie, he ain't got no tongue. Speaking of which, does anybody even care that Van Hagar reunited? What would you rather hear: Right Now or Ain't Talkin' Bout Love? Eruption, indeed. Twenty-six years later and would-be axeslingers are still pumping that out at the local Guitar Center. These assmonkeys wouldn't know Al DiMeola from C. C. Deville... the polesmokers. :mad:

Ha well, I think we're discussing numbers. And, in the end it's a disapointment but hardly a bomb. It is Disney's highest grosser for the year, so I'm sure they're more put off by King Arthur than this one (which also, no doubt, cost less than King Arthur).

I'm not talking quality of film, I'm talking pure numbers and profitability.

The film is profitable for Disney, no question.

It's not as profitable as they expected, but that's show business.

And yeah, it sucked. But there's a sucky movie that makes money ("The Village") and a sucky movie that loses money ("King Arthur", "Around The World in 80 Days").

Disney seems to be having more of the latter and less of the former.

Yeah, Disney's really taking it in the shorts this year:

1. Village, $107 million (hit)
2. Hidalgo, $67 million (disappointment)
3. Kill Bill Vol 2., $66 million (hit -- for Miramax)
4. Miracle, $64 million (small hit/moderate disappointment, depending on who you ask)
5. Princess Diaries 2, $61 million and counting (hit)
6. King Arthur, $50 million, (flop on $140+ million investment)
7. Home on the Range, $50 million (disappointment)
8. The Ladykillers, $39 million (flop based on budget/expectations)
9. Raising Helen, $37 million (disappointment)
10. Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen, $29 million (disappointment)
11. Around the World in 80 Days, $23 million (flop, but not their flop. They just distributed...)
12. Jersey Girl, $25 million (disappointment/flop -- Miramax)
13. Ella Enchanted, $23 million (disappointment/flop)
13. The Alamo, $22 million (*massive* flop)
14. My Baby's Daddy, $17.5 million (disappointment -- Miramax)
15. Teacher's Pet, $6.5 million (flop)

Ignoring the Miramax films and their distribution deal for Around the World, that's what... two bonafide hits, one small hit, five disappointments, four bonafide flops, and not a single breakaway blockbuster. That's 3-9, in case anybody's counting. Ouch. In comparison, last summer at this time, they had two breakaway $300 million+ grossing hits.

I like Disney. I've made no bones about that. Here's to hoping for a turnaround soon. As it stands, it looks like their big moneymaker this year will be a Pixar film -- whom they are losing in 2006. The time is ripe, the time is now, the stage is set... for Black Hole 2!!!

Does Disney keep any stake in F911? I know they didn't distribute, but they did finance and you would think that would get them a big chunk of the backend.

There's a new Benji movie out?! I think one of those Benji movies was the first movie I had ever seen in a theater!

I don't think so. Disney washed their hands of the film, the Weinstein's bought it and made a fortune. Bear in mind that F911 has outgrossed every other Disney release this year.

Also, I don't believe Disney financed the film. I think that Miramax picked up distribution rights only.

The guys can't catch a break. They're perceived as a hugely liberal-minded organization, yet when they avoid a controversial and primarily liberal-minded piece they end up losing the rights to millions in revenues. They couldn't even get the home video rights either! They gotta be smartin' over this...

I think Collateral will sneak past $100 million. It has almost no competition right now with trash like AvP and Exorcist out there. It has Tom Cruise, so they'll keep it in theatres until it reaches the mark (remember Vanilla Sky people).

It is an actual good movie, most people seem to like it. It will continue to do decent money on weeknights and have a couple more 7 or 8 million dollar weekends.

Huge hit. Have you seen what this did on DVD? Disney made a lot of coin on this film.


Approaching 100 million+ overseas already. Too early to tell the ultimate fate on this one. I say "disappointment" for now.


Will most likely triple that gross on DVD and rentals. Plus strong album sales. "Hit," baby.


Again, DVD will be very kind to this film.

While Matt is right, Scott is also correct. All the films that Scott pointed out will make their money back once they all hit DVD.

My Baby's Dady? Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen? king Arthur? They're not the Alamo, but it's a little stronger than disapointment imo.

Scott, almost any film nowadays becomes profitable once DVD, cable, and pay-per-view revenues kick on. But that's not what we're discussing here; I'm just talking box office alone.

And yeah, while King Arthur may clear $100 million overseas, it *still* won't make a profit until DVD sales kick in. The film cost $140 million to make and nearly another $50 million to market. You figure studios take in 50-55% of the gross, which means that at even a $200 million international gross, Disney has still lost money on the project. Likewise, Universal won't see a single penny returned on "Van Helsing" until ancillary revenues kick in.

But Disney's investors right now are looking at domestic/international performance -- and they are not happy. Eisner and Co. were excitedly pointing to "The Village" as their late summer savior. While it's made money for the Mouse House, it hasn't made enough to counter the huge losses encountered on other projects.

1. My Baby's Daddy was a cheap film to make. The film easily broke even once it came to DVD.
2. Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen sold plenty of copies once it came to DVD easily making a profit.
3. King Arthur, ask me again once the DVD hits. :)
