not sure if i should keep FREAKS
just bought it as a blind buy on dvd. seems great, but i dunno if it was worth 15 bucks. didnt' take it out of the packaging yet.
|
In moments of crisis like this I ask myself "What would Jesus do?".
Jesus would keep it. |
Why did you buy it if you didnt think it was worth it?
|
I would get rid of it, if I were you. Doesn't have any replay value to me whatsoever.

Freaks sucks. And it scares the hell out of me but not in a good way. Ditch it. Don't buy into the hype about it.

One of us. One of us. Gooble gabble, one of us!
You have to watch it once, just to see the original chicken lady (gotta get laid). Besides, how can you NOT be fascinated by freakish mutations like Zippy the Pinhead, Tom Eck the Half Man, and Prince Raj(?) the Caterpillar man? |
TCM is playing it on October 16th @ 02:15 AM. If you can wait that long, take back the disc, watch the movie, then decide if it's worth owning.

What would Jesus do???
He would take it back and use the money to buy PASSION OF THE CHRIST. |
I'm sure Jesus would LOVE to watch himself getting whipped for two hours.
Jesus still watches VHS, btw. |
along the same lines...
the movie seems interesting, but does this movie glorify looking at disfigured and "weird-looking" individuals? I mean I don't tend to do that in public as I deem it to be most disrespectful and highly inconsiderate. Is this movie like that or am I reading too much into it?? And why is it so re-watchable according to some? Thanks for help. |
I watched the film on TCM for the first time not long ago. It was interesting to see since it's so infamous, but I personally wouldn't want the DVD. Not the kind of movie I'd watch over and over.

Scott, it has "freaks" in it. They are actors and are integral to the plot (obviously). You get a good look at some of these people, but the movie doesn't really give you the impression of ogling human mutants for 90 minutes.
If anything, the freaks are the most normal people in the movie. The "normal" people in the movie are kind of the bad guys. This isn't a movie for everyone. You also have to remember that when this movie was made, these people made their money by exhibiting themselves. Most liked the attention. Some didn't even need to be in sideshows to make a living. They just did it because they enjoyed being a part of the show. I'm fascinated by mutations and watch all I can on the discovery channel. I figure if they didn't want us to look at them, they wouldn't be on TV. |
Speaking of Freaks, yesterday at work I ran into a midget lady who was about 2 feet tall, large body, but small head and baby like hands and a high pitched voice.
She had quite a sarcastic sense of humor,as she loudly joked about a previous customers mean overbearing husband and said she would like to smack him, since people should'nt be that disrepectful to others. It was interesting to say the least and made an otherwise horribly grueling day at work with annoying customers, all the more interesting. Since she was at least nice to me,while the other customers were really bitchy and you just wanted to scream at them, but had to keep cool. Oh Scott, check out the film at least once. Put all your PC senstivity insecurities behind you and watch the film with an open mind. I thought it was alittle more than just a gazing gawkfest. Then again I was not shocked by the film at all, while others may be more surprised by it and or offended depending on how uptight they are. Even if it was intended as an exploitive gawkfest. It didn't offend me at all,nor seem like one. |
Great movie, GREAT extras... definite keeper.

David Bowie makes reference to this film in Diamond Dogs.
Just a stupid bit of trivia to get you through the night. |

Originally posted by mllefoo I figure if they didn't want us to look at them, they wouldn't be on TV. Anyways, just watch it and see for yourself. It's a movie you'll never forget, that's for sure. Personally, I think the "freaks" in this movie are portrayed very respectfully and honestly. This movie is not about gawking at them at all, and the reason it may be disturbing to you I think is more based on how you feel about seeing people like that going into it. And the end is really an amazing piece of work. Watch it, have your heart race some, maybe feel a little uncomfortable, then think about it later and maybe you'll even take something positive from it. |
Excellent, intriguing and just plain creepy. Great movie but not one I would like to watch over and over.

Was a decent movie... saw it in Film Class last year. Nothing i'd want to rewatch again though, even though the DVD is fairly cheap.
