As somebody who grew up in the 80s, that gives this some potential to scare the ever-loving shit out of me.
What? He is the master of 1,200+ page build ups just so he blow everything up to cram the third act into 5 pages!
The last line of that book will always haunt me.
To this day, the end of that movie has fucked with me emotionally more than any other movie ever has.
My mom was a huge King fan (as was I at a time). She still believes he didn't write all his books because of the dramatic tonal shifts from era to era. The only constant (beyond the constant readers) is his inability to deliver a satisfying ending.

I used to LOVE the open endedness to the Mist. It's my favorite novella/short story. That being said, Frank Darabont hit a grand slam with his ending.

Maybe King could have someone come in at the very end and ghostwrite the final bit to his novels.
I've found his short stories consistantly have more satisfying endings than his full on novels.

Now that's pretty damned close to what I envisioned when I read the book.

Sorry, that's all wrong. He can't be filthy and gritty like Heath Ledger's Joker. The thing that's frightening about Pennywise is that he is bright and vivid and clean despite being in a filthy sewer. That's one thing the TV version got right.

Both promotional pics thus far have been very specifically shot and tweaked to show off the evil side. We have zero idea how Pennywise looks normally.

I think the problem is with them trying to make him look scary. Tim Curry's IT was terrifying and he basically looked like a normal clown aside from his teeth.

Exactly. Pennywise is scary because his appearance is so incongruous. He's a perfectly normal looking clown who shows up in perfectly abnormal places where a clown should never be. Him just standing there on the poster is a nothing. Less than nothing.

He looks like a member of the Insane Clown Posse mixed with Chucky or something. Regular clowns are creepy enough (in movies anyway). Tim Curry scared the living crap out of me. Sure I was a kid, but I found him more terrifying than any other horror villain/character, except for Michael Myers (that's comparing apples to oranges). Kathy Bates in Misery comes in second.

Seems like he wandered in while doing a cosplay of Killer Klowns from Outer Space.

That doesn't work for me. Like others have said, Pennywise's trap was that he looked like a normal clown that suddenly turned evil. That was how he trapped children. No child in there right mind would approach this dude. I would feel more comfortable approaching Captain Spalding, at least his comments would keep me amused.

I'll wait to see how he is in the movie. They may shift the makeup slightly to make him more friendly. The photo may represent his look between friendly and all-out demon. As I won't judge a movie based on a poster, I won't judge a character based on a photo without context.
